new(old)boat

Those mercs are nice motors smooth and lots of power. Can you remove the prop it is a good idea to grease the splines at least once a year and change the gear oil at the same time. Best before winter storage so any water that may wander in there dont freeze and crack the gearbox. I bought a cheap pressure tester on ebay and fogging it if it is going to sit for a bit is also a good idea along with running it out of fuel after each use to keep the carbs clean. I had a 1964 50hp merc 500 but had to get rid of it there was no long shaft conversion for it. I`m gonna guess early to mid 60s. Sea Way Marine has parts schematics you can find part numbers and the worlds best selection of parts they are just off the west seattle freeway and they do ship. If you dont know the year you can go to oldmercs.com with your model/serial number and get that info or give it to me and I will research it for you. Take care of it most parts are hard to find and expensive especially the ignition system.

thanks, that's good info.the engine is a '78 unit, but the boat also came with a '74 merc 115.it's pretty much the same, except it has a distributer instead of the cdi ignition, and the power tilt has two outboard mounted cylinders and remote pump instead of the more conventional integrated setup.this spare motor has a burned out piston, but is good for parts.i also have a '78 merc 70 hp(3 cyl) motor here;the ignition system is just half the system on the 6 cyl 115hp,i'm thinking that if by chance the pistons are the same and the bore on the 115 isn't too bad i might be able to use the parts to save the '74 115.but in the meantime,i just want to put some more hours on this old boat and explore the island from a different side than i have been.

went to oldmercs and ordered up a decal kit,and got some very good info on this motor.going to dress it up like new, that'll be way cooler than some new motor.thanks, kimcrwbr for the links.

Nice Grady! My family has a mid 70's 21' Grady White, I can't tell you any of the specifics other than I spent most of my childhood summers on it and it's got an inboard of some sort, lol. Hasn't been in the water in a long time though... and if you guys think that's old, check out my uncle's Feather Craft, it's a '58 or '59, with an 1950's Oliver 35 hp outboard (he collects vintage outboards)

lindsay,i am absolutly in love with that ranchero-i used to be right into the 60-63 falcons in my earlier days, had lots, wish i still had my 62(it was my favourite).that boat is beautiful-i was surprised while researching my old mercs how many out there are collecting and restoring old outboards.....and kimcrwbr, that motor is acually an '87 wearing the covers from a '74.i didn't think they still made them that style that late.i also have the '74 115 that was original to the boat,i think i'm going to restore it.

well,i found a kicker for it.....needs a little paint and polish,but it runs.it's a '78 20 horse,nice match to the 115.traded it for an 80's mariner 15hp-we both came out happy.:yahoo:

A friend had a 16' Dixie Devil with a 150 merc with a 115 cover just like that.
Damn boat was scary!

i bet!speaking of scary, the 'other' boat that i won't have time to finish this summer is a 15' fiberglass runabout with a 351w for power, through an omc leg.will be running edelbrock goodies on it,and 10/1 pistons, should be good for at least 300 horse.:headbang:

That's gonna be some NASTY fun! I may have to visit you and take a ride in it!

I also may have to bring three pairs of underware as well.
