New member 5.0 swap

Awesome willy, just the info I was looking for. Im thinking ill stay auto for now just for ease of install to get this thing on the road. And if I get the 97-98 pcm i wont need reprogramming for pats or to tune out the auto functions if I went to a standard tranny.

Ok, so Ill find a 2wd 4r70w from a 96-97 expo, same pcm, and should be good to go.

Just cause I'm going thru my swap on my 94 and using a 96 eb awd . I work in a transmission shop (Aamco transmissions) and the only thing I'm doing to convert to 2wd is converting the 4r70 the came with ,by swapping the rear output shaft and tail housing pretty much . Parts are cheap . No need to look for another trans .
Now the next step is driveshaft ideas

Hmm so can keep my current trans. That'd be nice. How hard is it to change the rear output shaft?

It has to be torn down like said above . The cost is hard to say though just cause I work in the shop and only see parts cost . The parts I need are just laying around the shop on shelfs . So the cost is next to nothing for me . I can tell you that you should find a slow for business at this time transmission shop (maybe a Aamco [emoji6]) as long as the trans is in good shape and doesn't need any hard parts the cost would be cheap for just a reseal and tail/output swap . To bad you ain't here In Austin Texas I could help get you squared away . That does apply to anyone on the forums here in central Texas if your in the area .

Tbones:

My Ranger is a Canadian '98 - no PATs but does have high pressure/no return fuel system. ('98 Explorer was the opposite: PATS but low pressure/return fuel system). My 3.0 also came with the dinky 60 lph fuel pump (caused a high rpm lean which took some time to troubleshoot; kind of PIA to get at too).

ATX:

No offense, but your cost and mine wind up being miles apart :(

I was quoted 6 hours to rebuild at shop rate of $100/hr = $600; and shop isn't giving away the housing/shaft, so add $200 more. In for a penny, in for a pound - while it's apart might as well replace the clutches, bands, etc...another $600; add a new torque converter $300, throw in the oil and I was looking at over $1,800! And transmission was out of truck!!

So, the 4r70w from 'stang was cheap solution for me (3.8 auto Mustang being far more common than a 2wd Explorer). When it starts slipping too bad, I will rebuild it and not be out anymore than I would have with a rebuild from start.

Don, I understand and that's what I stated . It really depends on the mileage on the unit . If it low it's worth it if not then find another . I just know what I see run though the shop and the fact that I'm immersed in the automotive field whether it be stock or performance oriented. Even if the shop wants to much , I guarantee that there's a transmission builder in the back of the shop or any shop that's willing to do it on the side . My builder runs more transmission out the back of the shop then the shop brings in the front lol it's just a option is all . I bought my explorer complete for $1050 and the only thing I'm needing is a dual sump oil pan and pickup , oil relocate , driveshaft redone and convert the 4r70 .

The only thing about finding a trans in the jy is , why was the car at the jy to begin with if not wrecked . It's a roll of the dice and time . The unit in the explorer worked just fine when you drove it home right ? Which should mean everything is good inside . Jy unit you don't know . Them putting the trans back together with all the old parts isn't any different I feel then throwing the jy unit in . It's just you already know that it's been gone through . In the end everyone's build is different when they come together .

So last weekend got screwed up but definitely pulling the 5.0 this weekend. Any tips I should know on pulling this motor? Would it be easier to remove grill and pull engine and transmission together?

Are you just scraping the expo at the metal yard if so , then cut that radiator support out for sure [emoji106]?I saw all 'd mine two weeks ago when I pulled mine [emoji108]

Yup its scrap after. Thats a good idea. I got a sawzall with lennox blades, cuts gr 10 bolts with ease. Make short work of that front clip. So best to do that and pull engine with transmission?

If you haven't already done it ,yes chop away

Yea if expo is going scrap yard cut the front clip out but save the radiator if its as its larger than the ranger one and fits in the same hole.

As far as the tail housing swap the 4r70w is one of the simpler autos to rebuild if you have some mechanical knowlage theres a good youtube series on it its like 12 hours long and dry as shit but it goes through everything yoy need to know to have a shop do it your looking at 500 to 1500

Right on thanks Willy! I am decesnt with a wrench so should be able to do it. (Famous last words?)

Ya ill definitely cut the clip off and save the rad.

Let's see the remains of the expo and etc need some pictures (I can't read to well I just like pictures ha ha )

Also sounds pretty awesome I'll b watching to see if u have cooling probs and how you solved them (because I am having probs and can't solve it)

Also I'm not to awesome with wiring I kinda of get the just of what you were talking about not sure what pvm, pats and a few other abreveations ment to me a tune is how much you adjust the air fuel screw and what size jets ya got lol
