New Guy with entry level questions....

When I was in Alaska I covered the whole grill w cardboard..lol.. I still have my cracked windshield from pea gravel....

115-120 is max doable with stock cam, a good cam can get you upwards of 170-180 with a little head work too. I suggest bo-port, they sell a drop In top end kit, comes with everything but the rockers and head. Cam, lifters, valves, springs, retainers, keepers. And they do high lift without expensive head work. The kit is $750, worth it in my opinion. If you want to spend mine on good parts, that's where I would go. Probably stage 2.5 cam. You would be looking at around 140-160 hp.

Are you planning on injection, or carb?

I'm going w/a carb set up, I will model my build after the ministock motor in the clip. I'm going over today to see if I can make a deal on the 92' Ranger motor/tranny. At least I will have a bottom end to start with.

Ok, carb makes it much easier and a bit cheaper. My suggestion is get a Holley 350cfm carb, you can buy a new one from speedwaymotors.com for a reasonable price too.

OK you guys... I have a deal on the Ranger stuff depending on your confirmation of this question...

Will a 1992 Ranger 2.3 Bottom end accept an old school distributor ??

I intend to use the bottom end and get a single plug head... Will this plane work ???...

Yes, it has a plug with a gear on the bottom and a shaft to run the oil pump, it is the same design as the bottom of a distributor.

Thank you Mike... I guess I will go grab it !... Stay tuned !!... Thanks, Paul...:icon_thumby:

OK, dragged it home..lol.. The guy who had it was awesome ! He gave me a good deal and delivered it to my house so I can pull off everything I need.

Many, many thanks to Mike, Mark and everyone who chimed in, I really appreciate you guys tuning me up on this !...

OK, my project has begun !...

Let me know if you guys need anything...

Good luck and have fun! I'm always happy to help out.

I pulled the motor, got it cleaned up and on the stand. The dead ranger is gone and now I can pull the motor apart !.. Whoo Hoo...

P.S... The TRS tech page is fantastic and the 2.5 crank stroker trick as mentioned by Mike is the coolest...

Cool...and glad to help when I can.

Did you pull the transmission also or are you going to do just the motor? I guess it depends on the mileage you have on your current transmission...but just my 2¢ worth...my first Ranger had many parts changed on it over the years...but I kept the same transmission...it had over 400,000 and still shifted like it was new.

Of course, I changed the fluids about every 100K or so...and only had minor grinding over all those years...and that was caused by my clutch being pushed through the floorboards so I wasn't fully engaging it before shifting.

I actually did the 2.5 in my ranger, problem was the cylinders were so worn out that it ended up breaking a piston, and I replaced them without machining them, like I always telling.everyone not to do, and burnt up a new piston. To get me through the winter I have put my 2.3 from my car into the truck.

Yeah Mark, I did get the tranny also... It has 107K on it, shifts smooth on the bench.

What are you putting the engine and trans into ?
