long story short, I had to replace the gas tank in my ranger. as long as it was out I decided to replace the fuel pump/sending unit. I got an identical gas tank same size, part number, etc from a local scrap yard. the new pump matched up size-wise with my old pump.

I filled up twice now with the new tank in, and it seems like my gas gauge is off by 3-5 gallons. any thoughts?

it also seems like I am going through a little more fuel also. I am only getting around 16 mpg, whereas with the old setup I was getting around 18.

(I also changed the fuel filter, and rechecked all connections)

No explaining the mpg unless winter blend gas is here already. You can sometimes bend the float arm and "adjust" the gauge but of course need to pull the bed to do it. I've done it on some of my work trucks before but it is trial and error.

New fuel tank from a local SCRAP yard?

Did you clean the tank out? Perhaps some Techtron fuel system cleaner might fix the problem, it is known to restore malfunctioning fuel gauges.

no, not new tank. it was an identical tank-size and part number. it was a new fuel pump.

yes, I cleaned the tank out

what type of float was on it white plastic or the black foam looking one?if its the black one and you let it sit out to long, or in the sun they will sometimes start to absorb fuel and become heavy and not gauge the fuel level correctly after reinstall, I always wrap them up so they can't dry up, and become porus

it was the white plastic float. the guage reads less fuel than is actually in the tank.

Ah Ha, so does the gauge read full when you top the tank off, mine started doing something similiar but would drop after a few gallons where used to about the four gallons used mark on the gauge, then after sometime it would read full with fill up then it would drop after a few gallons to just above the half way mark on the gauge, until after about six months it would read full at fill up then only a 1/4 tank then it just quit, I waited till the in tank pump went bad and put a used unit in and she was fine so the sending unit died a slow death when I examined it the windings on the board had all shifted giving the faults readings

yes, the guage reads full when I top off the tank.

the first time i filled up after the tank-replacement, the guage read 1/4 tank left. I put 13.32 gallons in. it was full. I have a 20 gallon tank.

it seems now that every time I look at the tank it gets lower, faster. like I have a 460 under the hood!

right now the guage is just about on empty. but I think there is somewhere around 5 gallons left in the tank, maybe? I will fuel up later today or sunday with a full tank to see how much is actually left in the tank. I will let you know.

maybe I have a defective pump/sending unit that I bought new :annoyed:
