New build burning rich

:bsflag:tried the code blinks today and didn't really get much from it. What I am going to do now is take it to a hi-po shop that is fairly close by and let them do the fine tuning to this engine.

it is funny how all the guys in this site talk about how easy it is to swap and build up these motors, however, when one is actually built up and you run into probs with them and post/ask for direction or help in trouble shooting, not one person answers in here that has done this swap and can give any true direction; nor have they encountered probs in the build up/running. makes me wonder.:bsflag:

What did you get from it?

hi, to the best of my knowledge on the key on engine off test we got : 13 - 17 - 173 .... was not able to fully figure out the running test for I dont have a sweeping voltmeter. all i did to get the above numbers ws hook a jumper wire to the - terminal and then hook the other end to the single wire in tab to jump it. I am not 100% sure how to hook up for the running test and where to plug the eec thing into what jumper place. on one other hook up we got a 8 single blink. we did the tests from the in cab watching the check engine light.

if we unplugged the negative cable from battery for greater than 10 minutes, will this reset the computers memory?

hope this helps.

ps sorry if I seemed a bit harsh in my last post, just getting abit frustrated and I have to get put out in the AM in hospital and abit on edge....

Yes disconnecting the battery for a while will erase the KAM (keep alive memory) and the ECM will have to 'relearn' itself.

Hey guys, Angie found this site and I feel positive that my answers lay in here somewhere. It has excellent articles all about EFI and sensor info. complete detailed codes, maf specs, o2, you name the sensor it is here. not to mention this site has downloadable tune progams.

cheers.

Hey sasq.... from that efi link i read this article....

would you read the thing and then when you get to the last para that i will copy to here. and then tell me if it is better off that i just take this truck in to get fine tuned? thanks.

"After many days of driving on the highway it begins to fill with multipliers like “1.2’s” and “0.9’s”, which will alter the master table. Don’t believe me? 14.7:1 X 1.2 = 17.6:1, and 14.7:1 X 0.9 = 13.3:1, and we just fine tuned our fuel curve without doing anything special. Isn’t that cool? Well not always, this entire technology depends on the Oxygen Sensors being fresh, clean, new, and in good condition. And it can’t be responsible for displacement changes, cam changes, or other big performance add-on’s. This technology is only meant to keep EEC on the same level as an ageing engine with diminished performance. It is not meant to be relied upon for performance engine tuning!"

Purchased new o2 sensor and will place it in this afternoon, will update as to if this helps solve problems.

After replacing the O2, disconnect the battery again so that the ECU will relearn it's fuel curves.

Have you put a fuel pressure gauge on it?

Have you replaced the engine temp sender or atleast confirmed that the computer sees that it is getting up to temp? if the sender is faulty then the computer will think the engine is cold and will keep throwing fuel at it until it sees that its warmed up.

you have obd1 right ? in tiss case why do you need a swinging needle you can read cel flashes

Wasn't able to change the o2 today, will get it done tommorw.

Angie was able to help me get the new set of KOER codes by jumping from the eec under motor with test light.

here is what we got

16 - RPM too low perform HEGO test.

12 - cannot control RPM during ER selftest high-low RPM

173 - HEGO rich system right side

412 & 411 - cannot control RPM KOER low&high RPM check

will check fuel pressure at shop tommorw, (they have alll the proper tools and gauges there)

will read up on engine temp sensor, no I never changed it for I figured that it would be fine for all sending units worked on the wireharness that i used prior to swapping the motors. thanks for that heads up :) and will look into this.

Running Rich

Would like to see the probable cause for Rich Problem.

My 94 Exploder with 4.0 is reporting code 176 which says lean on left side o2 sensor.

Maybe the answer to rich will help me solve the lean.

OK, getting somewhere. new o2 sensory wiped out all the off beat codes. only one that keeps showing up is...

173 hit a couple new ones thou, 538 & 536 but these are break faults, (which make sence for we redid the front calipers today.

wasn't able to do fuel rail test for the shop where I built up this motor is a heavy duty mechanics shop at work and they don't have low pressure testers. only high volume deisel (cat cummings etc...)

however, after changing the o2 sensory, the motor is running at lower RPM and is not burning as RICH as it was so progress is being made. the RPM still is a bit higher than it should be, but maybe after full break in this will sort its self out.

any more options will be tried. next to re-run are I will test out all sensors now to see if this can be pinpointed to another section.

cheers

There is one other thing that I haven't mentioned about this rebuild. the 92 used to have air con in it... I HATE aircon so i took out all the compressor and the lines & heater/cooling systems. (placed in the one heater fan system from my 91 donor truck) left the wires plugged into the harness thou to keep the looping going. No idea if this would play havoc with the build.
