A little background info: I have a 2003 Ford Ranger 4x2 2.3L with all wheel ABS (as far as i can assume) and 45,000 miles
This is the first time i changed rotors (later I shall attempt the rear drums)
I went through a few pages of topics with the keyword ABS but couldn't find anything relevant.

So tonight I attempted to install new front disc brakes and rotors. After fiddling with it for a few hours (damn dust cap refused to come off) I finally succeeded in taking off the dust cap, I installed the new rotors with wheel bearings and plenty of grease, got it back on and mounted the caliper assembly, new brake pads, and remounted the caliper.

Once I turned on my truck, I realized the ABS light was on. I took it for a spin, and noticed my new brakes squealed when i stopped, and that when I turn slightly to the right, I get a squealing noise (turning as in trying to get into the next lane, I can make a full turn with no noise)

edit--ABS light turns on after going about a block.
Any ideas on where I screwed up, I think on the brakes squealing, I didnt clean them properly since I was getting frustrated with it, but I thought I soaked them pretty good with brake cleaner.

For the ABS light, is there a wire that I didnt see, or did I break the sensor?

and for the squealing, i guess i bent something?

PS. I have not been able to narrow down any problems other then to the front brakes that I changed. Its too late for me to try and check them out.

All you can really do for the noise is start taking it apart and look for something rubbing. Also, if you have 4 wheel ABS, make sure they gave you the correct rotors with tone rings on them for abs. I have also seen new rotors out of the box with the tone rings installed crooked, making them wobble which could make them rub on the sensor. That could be the cause of the light and the noise. Ya just need to start inspecting.

damn, off with those pesky dust caps again.

What/where exactly is the ABS sensor, is it on the mount where the rotor goes and makes contact with the ring you mentioned?

PS thanks for the response...im just learning as I go

I'm wondering why anyone would WANT to replace the rotors and drums at only 43,000 miles :icon_rofl::icon_rofl::icon_rofl:
seriously. I replaced mine at 140,000 and they were still going strong...

The truck has been wrecked twice, which caused the truck to shake when i stopped from highway speeds. The best quote I could get for turning the rotors around here was 30 bucks.

I don't know what they were smokin', so I decided to invest a little more in new rotors instead...of course now i get these problems...but you live and learn

Can anyone tell me what exactly this ABS censor looks like?

The rotors will have a slotted tone ring on the backside of them that goes around the hub that the bearing goes in.

The sensor itself will be mounted to the steering knuckle just behind the rotor.

Thanks Sasquatch_Ryda, at least I know I have the right rotors because thats exactly how they look. Now I just have to wait until tomorrow when I get to play with my brakes all day long :yay:

The rotors should just slide on onto the steering knuckle?...with no special effort?
