Yeah, hes got the bug.

What a suggestion for a good starter vehicle? Not looking for anything radical (right now) just something that is inexpensive and has good 1/4 mi times, and has good upgrade potential.

Me and him both are thinking Fox Mustang.

Or possibly a 80's style Camero....

Opinions?

imo, being a ford guy, i think the fox body is one of the best choices for this. easy to find for if somthing breaks, and lots of upgrades

i would go with fox mustang, but go for the notchback style. they are alot lighter becuase of the smaller rear glass, also early camaros have huge heavy glass in the hatches, plus i cant stand camaros lol

I agree with the Fox Mustangs. Plentiful, cheap, light. You also might look at T-birds or the mid 80's econo cars like the Fairmont.
Plus I hate Chevys.

I would say fox. Their easy to work on, and theres alot of parts out there for them.

How old is he, has he had much driving experience? Fox, even with a 4 banger would work. Build your way up to a turbo or blown one, they can surprise a lot of people. Lots of support. Glad to see that he at least wants to race on a strip. Just check while I was typing this and yes, the Fairmont would be something different also.

v8 ranger, I'm guessing that if you buy a cheap fox. it will be a four cylinder or a popped v8, So I would spend the money on cheap single cab ranger, and build you a mild v8,(351w). parts are plentiful, it has been done many times, easy to modifey later if you want more mods like tubbed rear end. less area to cage,(price of tubing is pricey now days) and if you do a 351w all the parts from a 302 will fit exept intake and oil pan. and for the intake they make a spacers that will allow a 302 intake to fit. Imo it will be about the same price by the time you build a mild motor and headers for a fox. and also if you are going to run a auto, fist thing I would do is a tranny brake, semi cheap and will decrease reaction times.

Hes 20 years old and is an awesome driver. Hes had a 87 Ranger 2wd shortbox that hes been taking to the races a few times, its just got a 2.9L with some goodies (Cam, 2.8 pistons, port and polish, etc etc) 4.10 gears and a 5sp, and it does alright in the street stock classes where theres mostly hondas and what not but he wants to get into somthing a lil more competitive.

I was thinking finding a early to mid 80's fox with a blown 302 in it, and then dropping a mild (4bbl, cam, headers, etc) 351W in it.

4 sp of course, or 5, whatever is stock in the fox's of that vintage.

Yeah the fox is a sure bet. Also don't count a turbo 2.3 out. Plenty of guys running 9-10 second 1/4s with the 2.3s. It's incredible how much power you can make with 140 cubic inches. Parts for 'em are super cheap too.
