OK, trying to get set for an axle swap on my mom's Muskrat.

It has (I think) a 7.5". I have no clue what gears are in it. I got a 28 spline 8.8 for $50 that I was gonna throw in my truck before I stumbled on a 31-spline disk brake unit for "make me an offer" (its going to get flipped tomorrow).

Anyway, the axle in the mustang is old, worn, and I happen to have an 8.8 just sitting around. I talked this over a bit with my shop foreman, and he thinks it will work, but I'm getting to the point where I need numbers.

How does the track width match up between a 65 Mustang and a 94 Ranger?

Anyone got pics of the rear axle's spring perches and shock mounts? I asked dad to get some pics for me, but I'm sure he is gonna take pics of the wheels and pumpkin, not the mounting points.

If the Mustang is a 65, it won't have a 7.5 or an 8.8 rear. It would be an 8 or 9 inch. If you're wanting to put a rear out of a Ranger, you may want to rethink. If I'm not mistaken, the pumpkin on the Mustang should be dead center; I know 79-93 is, and I see no reason for the older Mustangs to not be dead center as it has no transfer case option. The Ranger's pumpkin not centered.

I think shane96ranger is right about the mustang rear end being centered. I remember researching an explorer 8.8 swap for mine and everybody who did it said they had to clearance for the drive shaft down the tunnel due to the offset. Others said they swapped the tubes and shafts to make it even side to side.

Still playing with ideas here. I mean, I just have this axle sitting around. I paid $100 for a set with this and a D-35. If I don't end up using it I'm still getting more than my money's worth.

It just seems a shame to leave it sit and rot in the shed if I can make it fit.

I don't know exactly how far off the pumpkin is on a Ranger, but I would think it's in the neighborhood of 3 inches. I'd just hate to see you get a bunch of stuff prepared and have it not work out for you. I'm 99% sure that all cars with the 8.8 used coils.

What if you traded with somebody or a junkyard that has an axle that would work?

What engine in the '65' will determine which rear end it has. If it has the rear cover as the Rangers have, then it's a 7 1/4" and should have four wheel lugs. 8" & 9" were the removeable type, every thing came out the front. Only the 271HP Stangs got the 9". They were also off-set like the Rangers because of shift linkage being on the side of the transmission, allowing the shifter to be centered. Quite a few guys at the Mustang sites are using either the Explorer or Ranger rear ends to upgrade. The '65' should measure 52 1/4" from housing flange, side to side. Spring perchs were on bottom, 43" apart for many years. Think the Mustangs went to coil suspension in '79'. Got any questions about the 'Old' stuff, shoot me a PM or ask here.

Found pictures of my '66' Ranchero which is very similar.

From what I have read when guys put the Explorer 31 spline rear axles in those mustangs, they cut the long side axle tube down to be the same as the short side and get 2 short side shafts. The mustang diff should be dead centered.

what do you need?

What do you need measured.
I own a '68 stang with 8" and a 1996 Ranger with 7.5"

Spings under on Stang. over on Ranger.
