well guys, i need some help.. its been a rough week... spent 300 and put a new clutch in my ole mans 93 ranger.. its a 4 liter extended cab.. the problem started after the clutch was installed.. i had to weld new flanges on the y pipe. the problem is the truck runs good when its cold.. once it warms up a bit the idle is a little rough. you can hear a skip in the exhaust. when you drive it down the road, its kinda hesitant and doesnt have much power with like half pedal. if you step on it when the bogs down for a second then it picks up... I cant seem to get the issue. after it runs crappy for a little while you can hear the computer trying to adjust whats going on... i replaced the plugs, wires, and put 2 new oxygen sensors in it. tried swapping out the maf sensor and that didn't do anything.. put a new tps sensor in... would a coolant sensor contribute to the issue? so far ive spent about 450 into the hole thing and still cant seem to get it going.. i can't keep sinking money into it not knowing the issue.. This week his snowmobile blew a crank bearing.. just spent 600 getting that rebuilt and back together. My truck, the windshield broke, and the egr tube rotted off.. it has not been a good week at all. so i iam asking you guys for some ideas of what you think the problem could be.. :dunno:

Iam posting in the general forum to get a better/ faster response..

Thanks fellas! :icon_thumby:

too be totally honest dude the best decision i ever made was to find a shop i trust and have them diagnose the issue. its like 50-100 bux and hour and usually doesn't take long. youll spend ten times the money changin parts then you would having a professional test it with the correct equippment. i mean if you like the hard way feel free but its my $.02

hmm, that could be a lot of things yet.

doubt its a coolant temp sensor. Do you have a CEL?

when you welded the Y pipe did you disconnect the battery... not calling you crazy or nothin but it could of fried the ecu had that problem before on a different car

pull your vacum tube off of your FPR and see if theres gas coming out.

It sounds like a vacuum leak. I would have thought a leak would have thrown a code but you never know. Checking for a leak will cost you nothing, only time.

Did you accidently cross two of the spark plug wires? It happens....

y pipe was welded on OUT of the truck. wires were replaced one by one. my buddy plugged it into his blue point scanner and its throwing A bank one Too lean and a bank two too rich... I dont under stand it.. i only swapped out the maf sensor for a few miles but that was about it.. do you guys think that could be it a bad maf sensor..

could be correct me if you think im wrong but do rangers have knock sensors, my father in law had a motor completely rebuilt and still ran like crap. 4000.00 later it was a 35.00 knock sensor

What are the codes that you got? I know you said bank 1 lean and bank 2 rich but what are the numbers?

Hey... you sure it's not the EGR valve stuck open? EGR can cause MAJOR driveability issues. Generally it won't run if it's wide open... so it may just be partially open.

no egr on the truck. i did find that the maf sensor has me confused.. if its plugged in the motor doesnt run any better and with it UNPLUGGED to my assumption from other vehicles it should just about DIE... well it doesnt do anything with it plugged in or not plugged in.

its 230am i cant sleep worth crap. Trying to figure out this dump problem. i just replaced the plugs and one side they look redish brown lean and the other side they look rich..

as far as codes this is what i get with the koeo:

122 TPS sensor below minimum voltage. i replaced this.
157 maf sensor below minimum voltage
158 maf sensor above maximum voltage
172 system indicates lean bank 1
173 system indicates rich bank 1
176 system indicates lean bank 2
177 system indicates rick bank 2

i dont get it since i replaced the maf sensor and the oxygen sensors do i have a bad sensor even tho it was new? the maf sensor a buddy let me borrow and its brand new and works on his truck.. when you unplug it the truck dies and this truck doesn't.

Lean and rich codes do not mean that an O2 is bad. It can be caused by vacuum leaks (lines, intake gaskets, etc) introducing false air into the system that is not being metered by the MAF. The O2's then see more oxygen in the exhaust and will therefore tell the PCM to add more fuel to the mixture. Get a can of brake cleaner or carb cleaner and spray along the intake/throttle body and vacuum lines. If the RPM picks up when you are spraying, you have a vacuum leak in that area.

With the MAF unplugged, the truck should not die, but it will go into a limp mode where it will run off of a set of parameters that are stored in the PCM. It will throw a CEL.

Also, after replacing all those parts did you disconnect the battery and rest the KAM? (keep alive memory) This will force the PCM to relearn with the new sensors.
