Heys guys....Just found this site today and joined! Looks like a awesome place.

Here is whats going on. I have a 1988 Bronco 2 2.9 5 speed. Bought it about a month ago and just got it on the road. Ran good on the 150 mile trip home with no problems.

The truck is bucking really bad and acts like its choking out. It will die when I push the clutch in most times. It always starts and will idle just fine...a little on the high side but it does run smooth.

It will spudder and buck usally down low in mph under 35. After that she runs smooth. Some days it runs great and others it has these symptoms.

I have checked the obvious and did a code scan both koeo and koer. Its got full good oil, gas in the tank, coolent is good, battery is good.

The koeo test pulls codes 89 ( axod lockup, selenoid circut fail) CCO
and Exhaust Heat control.

Cyl 6

code 77 ( opperator error during dynamic responce test wide open throttle not sensed.

And I did the KOER scan this is what codes I got.

code 86 ( adaptive fuel limit reached oe 3/4 shift selenoid circut fail)

then code 11 ( system pass)

Are those tranny codes just for an Auto? Mine has a 5 speed.

Any help would be great. Thanks guys!

Forgot to say I changed the fuel filter last week. That was my first and easy guess but it still runs just as it did.

I was looking at the fuel regulator and didnt see a vaccum line off the back. Is it underneith it? all i seen on top was the fuel line.

Thanks guys

I'm new to B2's myself, but there should be a vacuum line coming off the back of that regulator, that connects up to the manifold.

sounds like a potential vac leak.

make sure you have the proper computer though...get the code off of it. might have a taurus computer in it...i ran them before after some unfortunate incidents.

anything from the tank sock to a bad fpr.

Can somebody tell me where the vac line goes from the FPR? I have a haynes book but its not very detailed in this area.

I will check the computer tommarow! thanks for the help everyone.

The vacuum line should connect to fitting on the back of the FPR. There's a fuel line coming in the front, and the vacuum line runs out the back and up the connection on the manifold. That's the way it is on my '89. straight out the back and up.

I think i found my problem. I knew the vacc line was supposed to be out the back of the FPR. After looking at pics on the 2.9 online i seen where its supposed to go. Somebody had a line going over the other side of the valvecover running up to where the FPR line is supposed to attactch.

I unplugged that that line and used to for my FPR and did it right way.

I can hear that there is another vacc line leak when it runs after taking it off of that valvecover. But it runs smooth as can be....no bucks, no stalls.

Does anyone know what that other side is? I will try to snap a pic.

Thanks!

maybee the pcv?

Follow the leaking line, it goes somewhere.

Here, this should help...

The PCV valve that was on there has 2 nipples. one that goes to the throttle body and another one that just leaks. I bought a new valve and it didnt have 2 nipples just the one that goes to the throttle body. It did help lower the idle.

but now after driving it another 50 miles all symptoms are back. Should I just get a brand new FPR? When I pulled the vacc line off the backside there was no fuel...ive read other postes and they always seem to have gas in the hose.

But i guess that doenst mean mine is not bad right?

Thanks for the diagrahm lost bushman!

If you have a vacuum pump like a Mityvac, one with a gauge on it, hook it up the back of the FPR and draw a vacuum on it and watch the gauge. It should remain where you left it or leak down a little. If it loses the vacuum, then replace it. If there's gas in the vacuum line, I would suspect that the diaphragm inside the FPR is leaking fuel through.
If you're symptoms disappeared, then came back, I think your problem is likely vacuum related.

the codes dont make sense to me and that is why i asked about the computer code on the computer.

86 is indicative of a lean condition which usually means this unit went rich as possible and its still lean. 88 should still be dual pumps...low pressure tank and hi-pressure on the rail. if the lp is laying down and not completely dead it will restrict fuel flow under load causing issues described, like mentioned could just be the filter in the tank...adds up to the intermittent nature.

if the vac system is messed up with misdirected lines...the canister purge solenoid could be adding a huge vac leak at times...this should be a non egr engine, but maybe it has a egr engine swapped in or vice versa and in any aspect has the wrong pcm for the application....

or maybe its just a piece of crap

theres a few is many things that can cause this
