Need some help...Problems with my Bronco 2

The guy before me had swapped the engine, tranny and computer. All from a 86 model. To makes things more complicated it was an Auto and he did a 5 speed swap. But non the less the thing runs and drives.

The thing ran great up untill this point. I have a new FPR coming in the mail so when that gets here I am putting that on. I think i will check the fuel pressure at the rails as well to see if its not a fuel pump problem.

Bobby....your only 30 mins away I am just going to bring it to you place hahahahaha:icon_thumby:

these codes make no sence to me either. It has to be the wrong computer in there. Pulling it out today and seeing what i can find about it.

Are these hard to trace down what and where they are from?

Thanks

here are the numbers off my computer. reading from top left to right

EEC- IV EFI-SD24A

*757* E8TF-12A650-U1C

8A264
gasket

I called the dealer and gave them the center number and they said its for a 88 auto.

Well thats no good. I am pretty sure thats whats giving me all the auto tranny codes from the scanner. But would that make it buck and run like crap some days?

is there a way to find out what year 2.9 is really in my truck? he told me it was a 86 but who the hell knows. Is there a stamp anywhere besides pulling the engine out ? thanks guys.:icon_welder:

If there's a casting number on the heads or block that would be a starting point but it will only tell you so much. For example an E6SE 5.0 head would have been used in 1986 or later (E is for 1980's decade, second number is the first year of production.)

It's kind of irrelevant anyway, a 2.9 is a 2.9, and the only real differences are a larger throttle body in 86 and 87 and revised heads later on.

Your computer issue is also probably irrelevant unless it is from a totally different application. Speed density computers do not take any transmission data into account other than the neutral safety switch. I'm using an ECM from a 5.0/AOD Crown Vic in my Ranger and it has a 4 speed manual, no issues, FWIW.

You need a fuel pressure reading, make that your first and foremost priority.

One other thing to check right off the bat is the MAP sensor and vacuum line attached to it. It's a little black box on the upper passenger side firewall with a vacuum line and some wires attached to it. A vacuum leak here or a bad sensor will cause a lot of the issues you describe.

I noticed the other day when i was looking stuff over that the negative ground coming off the battery was not bolted down to the block..it was just flopping around. I cleaned the end of it and bolted it down tight to a bolt. Ran great for 2 days! Not a single problem. Then today...bam right back to its old self. bucking, Stalking, smells like gas and exhaust mixed together stinks really bad.

The tail pipe is black as can be after todays short trip.

I put a new vacc line from the pcv valve to the trottle body, cleaned the throttle body, and cleaned both battey terminals and put new mounts on them.

Still runs like crap.

Have you replaced the oxygen sensor?

I am going to try and get one on it tommarow. Do these really make that big of a issue on these 2.9's?

How many vacc lines does the PCV valve usally have? Ive got one running to the throttle body. the new one i put on does not have that extra nipple for a 2nd line. it runs like crap when i swap these around too.

could it be a bad EGR?

Thanks

It's hard to help you troubleshoot if we don't hear back about the suggestions we offer. I'm speaking from my own experience with common 2.9 problems - suggesting things like the EGR valve etc is just shooting in the dark if you haven't tested the basics first.

I know I am still working on getting a fuel pressure guage. Thats really going to tell alot. As well as getting the timing checked.

I am just throwing other ideas out there to see what others have delt with is all. And what symptoms are cuased by bad parts or parts that are going bad.

Ive been to busy to mess with it the past week. Started it up today and it caught on fire. Engine is toast, hood, front fenders, front tires, interior.

Cant beileve it. :icon_welder:

RIP 10/13/12
