Tried using the intermittent wiper switch cleaning procedure outlined in the tech library by Stranger_Ranger, but when I got the cap off the end of the switch I found that I have no philips head screw in there. It looks like this:

I'm not sure that piece of plastic even comes out. Anyone else have the same assembly and know how to get the switch apart to clean it? Mine's a 94.

Yours is like my 92 and I tried cleaning mine even bought another wiper/multifunction switch. My problem is the relay or intermittent box down above the gas pedal.

bump....I still have no clue how to get this switch off...Hayne's manual isn't helping, it shows a different type of assembly - the one with the screw. :dunno:

Really need help with this one - I live in the puget sound area and use my wipers pretty much daily

*alert* Thread Necromancy

I’ve spent the last couple days searching for this same answer, and this was the most pertinent thread, but no solution.

1993 Ranger, trying to get the multifunction switch apart to clean the contacts as described in the Phantom Wiper tech article. Mine looks exactly like the OP’s switch in the picture when the cap is off.

If these things just come as a unit and I need to replace / dry out the whole thing, that’s fine. Just want to know if there’s a trick to get it apart.

Thanks,
Will

Really? Nobody has A) taken one of these types apart, or B) has realize that it's a unit and can't be taken apart?

Wow.

Get cracking and let us know what you find....

Ok.

1) The stick is a pre-assembled unit, and doesn't appear to come apart.

2) That doesn't matter on this style, because you can see there are no electrical connections in it. It is a pinion gear that moves a quasi ring gear to actuate the wiper positions. There's a little plastic button in the middle (shown pressed) that make your monkey pissers contact work.

3) All the connections are inside the body, and are accessible for maintenance.

So, I had that all apart, cleaned it with rubbing alcohol, and compressed aired them off. re-assembled and my wipers still just run in the off position, so it must be something else. Any further thoughts?

Thanks,
Will

PM me your e-mail address.

I have a good EVTM wiper schematic and trouble tree for 93.
Step by step.

I guess the mere presence of that manual did it, because they work correctly today....mostly. Put the CB fuse back in, and they didn't automatically run. Turned them on, and only had fast and slow.

Next, they just went back to just running in "off"

Pulled the CB breaker out again, put it back in, and this time the delay works too, and they stay off in "off"

Falls down a well, eyes go crossed. Gets kicked by a mule, they go back straight....I dunno.

lol this is interesting, but what did you use to clean it up? and then lube it? Any idea if these will help?

I cleaned it with rubbing alcohol, and compressed air. After, I schmutzed di-electric grease on it, and used some spray lithium grease on the non-electrical connections.

I'll check out those diagrams when I get home.

Thanks,
Will
