Hey guys got a Bronco II with the "CURSE"...the symptoms: Starts up idle for about 2-3 minutes then dies, sometimes it dies rough other times not so bad.

Has new: In tank fuel pump, high pressure pump in rail, fuel filter, inline fuel rail filter, IAC valve, TFI module, TPS sensor, MAP sensor.

I have 2 bronco ii's so i have been swapping parts between the both of them to find the culprit, one is an 88 and the non running is an 87, both 5spds with 4wd. Swapped the ECM module but didn't help so i'm assuming the ECM is good. I think it could be a bad ground somewhere but i cannot find it. There is a orange wire (ground) that runs from the ECM to the back of the block that i thought was the problem but it is not.

Any ideas would help greatly...thanks.

ok i have a question how do u know the parts on the other truck are good, maybe u just are out of luck and the parts on the other truck have the same problems lol no im not serious. ok so does it drive when u start it up or have u not tried to cause mine would start up and idle fine and then die in a few minutes and when i tried to drive it it wouldnt drive that far befor it died and i would have to limp it back home which wasnt for only a block or so.

the other BII runs fine. It will idle only for about 2 minutes then i can move it only if i baby it in those 2 minutes. Once it dies it will keep dying quickly after the first initial "cold" start.

Is the motor grounded to the frame?

I had the problem, that it would start when I was out of the truck and as soon as I sat in the truck it would die.

Check thbe groundssssss. There are several and all integral to your truck running. There might be corossion in the wires.

How is the fuel pressure?

40 psi all day. I saw a thread that said my 88 ECM would not work on an 87 because of the EGR that was added in 88? I'm not sure if this is true or not.

No, that is bass ackwards. An 87 PCM won't be happy (but will run the engine) in an 88 because of the EGR and knock sensor that were deleted in 88.

I bought an 88 for parts and swapped computers with my 87 to kill the EGR. I put the 87 computer in the parts truck so I could move it around, it ran fine but the CEL was flashing the whole time.

You bet it will.

With the exception of 1990 California emissions (a very rare beast indeed) ANY 2.9 PCM will run ANY 2.9 engine. The early computers get mad when put in newer trucks because of the removed components. The 88+ computer into an 86/87 model year is a severe upgrade to reliability.

Im guessing its a ground. Gonna replace the pcm and try finding the ground. Have you guys ever heard of the wiring harness going bad? I had a 89 eddie bauer edition b2 with power windows and the harness that ran from the door to the front of the car was bad so the window would only work sometimes.

Thats what I said, there are a bunch of grounds on the body and frame. There is one that runs from the passenger side of the engine to the frame that breaks sometimes, causes big problems

Still no luck with the curse...found all the grounds i could via chiltons and grounded them to the frame but still nothing. Anyone have any ideas
