Hey all,

I'm trying to get the 302 in the old Ranger running good. It has been sitting for over 2-years and only hit the trail a few times a year prior to that.

The 302 has a Holley offroad avenger carb. MSD 7 ignition module and wires, and split fire plugs.

It idles good with steady vacuum.

When you hit the gas to rev the motor in park, it bogs down. It doesn't bog off idle, it seems to start to rev and then bog.

I replaced the fuel filter and regapped the plugs to .035. The factory setting is .034.

The holley has a 'window' in the side of the float bowl and you're suppose to see the fuel at the bottom of the window. I've tried adjusting the float level with the adjusting screw/nut on top of the bowl. Doesn't seem to make any change in the window, but I did turn it up to much to where you could hear the fuel pouring in to the carb and had to turn it back.

The holley manual doesn't give any information on the accellerator pump.

I use to be able to pull off a pretty nice burnout with the truck. I need to get this fixed so I can start flinging mud next Friday.

Anyone have any suggestions? How much could 2-3 year old gas play on the problem? It was probably at about 1/4 tank and I added another 4.5 gallons to it.

One other thing, it didn't seem like the choke was working when I started it. The butterfly is wide open though. I checked the electric choke connection and it's getting power. Maybe it wasn't needed since it was so warm today.....

What kind of fuel pump does it have? Once on my jeep I converted it to electronic, and it sucked fuel so much better that it clogged the pump somehow and it was doing the same thing yours is doing. Also, is the fuel tank steel or plastic?

Electric fuel pump.

Gas tank is metal. I replaced the old rusty one several years ago with a new one. It has a coat of paint on it. Probably not rusting.

No smoke that I noticed.

In that case, maybe the carb is just gummed up? It has been sitting two years after all. I would start off by running the engine and spraying some carb cleaner in it.

it could possibly have a clog in the exhaust OR the cat(s) could of taken a crap (if you have them on). the gas could be a BIG problem too. use starting fluid and try and rev it up. if it revs good while you feed it starting fluid its most likely the old gas. if it still does it then i doubt its the gas.

It sounds like to me the accelerator pump isn't working or adjusted properly. Can you see gas shooting in when you push the throttle back?

I sprayed it out with carb cleaner.

No cats.

The P/N is 90670-1. I read on Pirate that Holley will replace the 670-1 models with a 670-2.

Read this...."From what I understand alot of their carbs have had problems because the "Check Balls" in the metering blocks were installed upside down."

I don't have time to send it in. I need to get it going by Friday.

damn holley must have some of employee (s) with substance abuse issues........

Can you idle it up with the choke on?

I would just take the carb off and clean it good, my mototrcycles do the same thing when they sit for that amount of time. The carbs usually get gas that gum up the main jets.

two things that come to my mind are (1)your power valve could be junk (2) your throttle shaft could be wore enough to cause a dead spot, had something simular on a rochester carb, idled fine, but when you cracked the throttle it would fall flat.

Gas apparently goes bad after just 6 months. Lotsa possibilities for problems there.

Incidentally, a lot of folks have reported huge quality problems with certain carbs like the avenger series.

I skimmed threw here and didn't see any reference to whether the gas in it is 2 years old? We've had cars that idle with old gas, but once you put any load on the engine it does all kinds of strange things.

I suggest drain the tank and fill it with fresh gas and go from there.
