need help please

I allways do the compression test three times to account for mistests write down the numbers as you do it and use the high number for each cylinder.

Compression test not a bad idea . If you have a cylinder with low enough to cause a rough idle, there is a quick easy test to check for un even compression. Good hot battery, or hook up a charger. Disconnect coil, so engine does not start . crank engine and observe for unevenness of rpm. If the engine turns over steadily you probably do not have a compression problem. If it is un even ,then run compression test to find out which cylinder is weak.

rough idle

My thought, with hard fault P1131, and rough idle. I would first look for a vacumn leak. Visually check all vacumn hoses ,loose cracked, deteorarated. Get a spray can of Berremans B12. Engine running, Spray around vacumn lines, between upper and lower intake manifolds. Be aware of any RPM changes or engine smoothing out. If there is a change try to isolate the area. You may have a leaking gasket or seal.

Thanks Julie for responding to my post. I have changed all the parts you have said along with a few more. At this point, when my husband doesn't have to work we are going to do a compression test. I have had some good advise from a lot of people, and then some who don't read what I repost and just get nasty. Didn't think that would happen, but go figure lol. If we get it figured out I will post it and let you know what we come up with. I have done all the same things as you, along with doing the things your friend did with the exception of a compression test. We will do that Thurs. or Fri.

How do I short the coil wires? Sea foam in the brake booster? I know about putting it in the fuel tank. I'm just a little confused about your instructions. I have the tool for the compression test, but what do I need for the vacuum test? Is it a tool, or is it just a piece of hose to listen for vacuum leaks?

While the engine is running pull the vacuum line from the brake booster and pour the seafoam in a bowl and just stick the fitting in the seafoam and let it pull it into the engine. You will need to give it some throttle so the engine dont stall. Make sure the engine is hot and the seafoam will dissolve the carbon on the rings, pistons and valves. Wait 1/2 and hour and then start it and rev it up some to blow all the crap out the exhaust until it stops smoking. I am thinking you may have solved the original problem that caused it to carbon up. If it works you will know immediately after the treatment. You may be able to borrow a vacuum guage from your local parts store you just hook it in one of the vacuum fittings on the intake tree just get a smatt tee and tee off of the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose.

One easy way to ground the coil wire/s is to just stick a spark plug in the coil wire off of the distributor and set it on a bare ground on the engine. That is also a good test to see if your getting a nice steady spark. Have you ever run the engine at night? You sometimes find bad plug wires just look for any arcing.

OK did compression check. did it at least 3 times to account for mistakes. Compression is 0 in cylinder # 2 Couldn't get a good reading on cylinder #5 due to blow by. Head gasket definitely blown. Contaminated antifreeze, but oil is not. The truck is a 1999 Mazda B3000 4x2 4dr. supercab. Does anyone know if I can drop a 4.0 in this truck without changing the tranny? Would it bolt up to the current motor mounts, or would I need to relocate them? At this point we would need to tear the motor down to the heads to figure out what is wrong. My only hope is that since the truck is still running (badly) that it is something that can be fixed. He has been driving my Ford Ranger with a 4.0 and likes the power it has. That's one reason he wants to know if we can drop a 4.0 in his truck. The other is that it would be a faster way to fix his truck so he could get it back. The other may be so that he can tell me to take my 1989 Jag off the list to be sold, since I have listed it on E-Bay and a local classified ads place for sale. He knows how much it hurt for me to do that, but I will sell it in order to get him some decent transportation. Thanks for all the insight everyone has given.

3.0 and 4.0 trans won't inter-change.
