well ive decided im going to get a full gasket set to fix most of the leaks that i have. i have alot of sludge and other crap in my motor so when i take it out im going to clean the heads, get a p&p done for the heads and intake, and get a cam kit with new lifters to replace my worn out ones. also going to do a new oil pump, fuel pump, freeze plugs, and im going to do a cam while i have it all apart. which one of these cam kits would be best with a 1800 stall and a4ld?

also i have a broken valve cover bolt, a little is sticking out above the valve cover, i think i can get some vice grips on it with the cover off. is there a better way of extracting it? also i have a stripped bolt hole on the i/m for the v/c bolt as well, how do i fix that? anything else i should do since i have the motor out?

if you read the full tech article, you'll probably be able to match everything up to get the most of your motor with your auto tranny and driving needs. mines doing pretty good so i'm hoping i won't have to do a rebuild for a couple more years. when i do, i'll be matching components up to the 5 spd manual i have in it and also for the type of driving i do most.

not in need of a full rebiuld, compression is good, just gonna redo my heads while im at it because all the nastyness is causing some problems, gonna get a new oil pump and screen so i dont do any damage, oil passages just need a good cleaning

i'd say go with the 204-4 and then get some heavier/stiffer valve springs. And with the cam you can time your motor and it will sound fine if you want it to sound camed advance time it. Just make sure that you do everything to spec. Another thing if your going to cam it id suggest doing a lifter upgrade to probably hydrulic lifters unless thats whats already there

this engine doesn't do hydraulic lifters.

Ask Comp what springs are recommended with that cam. What compression ratio does that run? Might want to bump that up some. Head work, duraspark conversion.

im gonna get the kit with the lifters too, im not doing the install it myself my stepdad is. he is the foreman for redbull racing(nascar). so im not worried about how to degree it and all he knows.

not sure on the comp ratio. im having the heads reworked(p&p'd) and im gonna use the bigger 2.9 valves with it. ive already durasparked it, and running a holley 350. will be getting some edelbrock headers, and im contemplating an offey intake but maybe a p&p port matched stocker will get me by. not looking for major power, but i figure since im having the top end redone might as well throw some goodies at it

While your doing the oil pump, get the Meling high volume one from autozone.

As for a cam, I like the sound of a lumpy cam.

i like a lopey cam too, yea im gonna get the melling hi volume, and a new pickup and screen. whats the best way to clean the oil passages of slude? im thinking of running nothing but diesel fuel let it idle for 10-15 minutes, drain, change filter, refill with kerosene, do the same. that should loosen everything up. if it messes the seals up it dont matter they are all getting replaced anyways. or does anyone have a better idea?

They make special stuff for cleaning out engines of sludge. Had a friend that did this after running it through his engine for the required and only 10 min, the nastiest stuff came out when he changed his oil.

One thing I read that can be done is run ATF fulid through the engine due to it being a detergant, helps with cleaning lifters, rockers, etc.... my step dad did this to his s10 and ran alot better sounded better too.

When doing this either run the used oil already in it or run cheap oil through then put good stuff in it.

Its not the seals I would be worried about ruinning when running diesel or kerosene, its the crankshaft bearings and whatnot that can spin or be ruined and will cause a total overhaul.

i already did the atf thing once and it didnt seem to help much...3 qrts atf and 1qt oil...ran it for 20 min then changed it. oil came out dark but not about normal for what it comes out as
