Hi

I am new here I have a 1988 Ranger 2.9L with automatic trans. I have these issues when I put into drive it has a creeking snapping sound coming from the trans. Drive works fine until you let off the gas or going down hill its slipping out of gear until you stop than its back into drive. I was having overdrive issues on the freeway going up hill 55mph it goes out of gear let off the gas put in drive. The trans is fine changed oil and filter a month ago all looks good whats the problem? how can I fix it? also when in OD it slips out of gear going down the off ramps I pull over turn off engine it resets than its fine until it does it again

Is it the 1-2 shift solenoid do I have to pull the valve body to fix it? is there just one solenoid is this something you can buy from Napa Auto Parts?

answer: a broken clutch disc or two will function fine in some ways and then just "let loose" and when the bind is removed it all returns to normal. and your solenoid just tells the transmission to shift from one gear to the next. it does not hold it in to gear. if nothing else it sounds like the solenoid is shifting you into gear just fine.

and to answer the edition to your first post i have never changed one on an A4LD but many transmissions you can replace it by merely dropping the pan

auto trans issues are gremlins that are difficult to diagnose. even by the most experienced trans specialists because many problems will manifest in the exact same way. so i may be wrong

**edit but upon looking at alldata i see that the only solenoid in an a4ld is the 3-4 solenoid. and are your problems happening when the truck is in 4th gear?

I called Napa Auto Parts

A4LD Trans 3 & 4 shift solenoid $246.59 I as thinking about this when I came out on the road it shifted good to 35-45mph than I let off it went out of gear. When I slow to 5-10mph it goes back into drive that would be low gear or pull over and stop

for $250 i'd buy a j/y trans

Is there a place that can run a test on the trans and get the code read out? or can you get one at an auto store. That way I can find out if its bad $250 hate to waste that if its not the problem. I seen a deal where you can remove the Solenoid and take the filter screen off it quick fix deal. Another question? how much does a good rebuilt trans cost I can install it myself

sadly not on the a4ld. and normally a good rebuilt trans shipped to your house is around $1000 there are a couple sellers on ebay that offer pretty nice warranties. a trans shop will charge you around $1800-2000 to rebuild your own.

When clutches are overly worn it slips no matter what.

its the OD oneway clutch/bearing and or the rear oneway clutch/bearing

nutrals out when you let of the gas.

88 xlt, are you in socal? I could help you out if you want.

Thanks Viper Command

I am in Northern California 45min out of Sacramento the trans needs to be rebuilt? anyway to fix it in the truck? Drive was working great until I put in OD on the freeway it went out gear now drive goes out of gear letting off the gas. I need help on this as I need this truck each day. I was using the brake as I slow with a little load on the trans keeping it from going out of grear. When it does go out of gear as you slow to 5-10mph it goes back into drive
