i have a 96 ranger with 3.27 gears. i have snapped the pin and spiders once before and just didi it again the other day. so i ripped the rear apart again i changed the pin and reused the gears because they are practically new and not worn at all. now a day later everytime i hit ice or snow only one of my wheels will spin and the other seems to shake and jump around i think i know what it is but please give me your opinion thanks......:icon_confused:

Is this an open differential or a limited slip?

the only thing is is that i have never had a problem getting them both to spin even on the road but after this time rebuilding it it just doesnt seem right. the last time i went to ford to get the spiders and pin but this time i took the pin out of a 3.73 rear on another truck i have and left the gears in there

Did the S spring get damaged or come out or place when everything else let go?

yes it did it went with the pin and the gears when i pulled cover the gears and the s clip were lying on the bottom and the pin jammed its self in between the pinion gear and the case it put a dent that is the size of the pin into the case i just left it and hammered down the metal that was mashed upwards

i am thinking about welding the gears good idea or bad? ive heard both cases and know enough that welding isnt great for daily driver

You can't weld a limited slip, you'd need an open diff to weld it up. Kind of hard to weld to clutch packs.

i made a mistake the rear out of my other truck is a l/s the rear in my truck im having the problem with is open rear. im thinking of switching rears but i think the 3.73 is a 7.5 and mine is an 8.8 and im told the 8.8 is a stronger rear what you reccomend im just trying to get an idea?

but my truck does have an s clip instead of the usual u clip that holds the side gears and axles in place

I'd say if it sounds fine on dry pavement, there's no metal shavings or chunks in the diff, and your gears are alright, it's probably just the wheel that spins catching traction and then losing it.

i want to lose that rear though i dont have the money to buy a set of lockers for it. it a bad idea to weld? i dont really care about smoking the tires off i just want posi in the mud!!!!!!

No, go ahead and weld it up if it's not your daily driver.

If its got an S spring in it is a limited slip not an open diff......
