So i drove from colorado to florida, about 1900 miles. and the last 10 miles my battery light comes on and the voltage is reading about 10 or 11 volts. i take the alternator out, have it tested and its only putting out about 11 volts. the machine said the diode in the alternator was bad. so i replaced the alternator and it ran for awhile but now the problem is back. the truck will run with the battery connected, but the instant i disconnect it the truck dies. it is a 2000 ranger 4x4 xlt supercab with a body lift and no other mods. what is the problem? battery? faulty wiring/ground? thanks for your help.

Re-check the alternator. Sounds as if it has died. If not, you have a wiring problem. Check the voltage across the battery terminals, engine running. Always make sure all connections to and from the battery are clean and solid. Many problems originate here.:)shady

replaced the alternator again, and the battery. maybe there was a problem with the battery making it so it would not charge properly and overworking the alternator. also put in another wire directly from alternator to battery incase there was a problem with the current one. we'll see if it works
