replacing and repairing fuel system on 88 ranger with dual tanks. 2.9l. On the driver side rail between fuel tanks and fuel pump there is a canister with 2 lines in, 2 lines out black and right at the cross member. I have to replace this due to one of the fittings has broken off. What exactly is the proper name for this part, as i am having a difficult time finding out what this part is. I have called a Ford dealership parts dept. and 5 or 6 salvage yards ( AND THE FUNNY PART OF IT IS ). Of all the salvage yards where i live there is one 87 and one 88 in town. If they are not duel tanks, will that part be different. Cant look at them until Wednesday. :icon_confused:
 
Sounds like a fuel tank selector valve to me.

If the ones in the junkyard are not dual tank trucks, they will not have it.

Good Luck, the dual tank option wasn't very common on Rangers.

Its called the fuel accumulator. It looks like the picture below=

Basically It acts like a fuel reservoir and holds extra fuel in the bowl as a reserve for the H.P. pump. There are two different types both look identical except one has a larger bowl that houses a filter, and the other one with the smaller bowl doesn't have a filter. both would work for you. I broke the fitting on mine as well(very common) so I just took it out and put a couple strait brass barbed fittings in its place. I haven't had any problems with it.
 
I have one on my parts shelf, but it's off a single tank.

thats the part, identical to the one off my truck. Question now is, how important is this part. looking at a wreck tomorrow to see if it has this part. if by passing doesnt interfere with fuel pressure and the inline filter is sufficient, then its an easy answer. Thoughts.
Also has any body manufactured small hatch in bed to get to fuel tanks. Would be nice to access without having to pull bed off or drop tanks. I have some ideas but would like some input. Thanks.:icon_cheers:
 
Ya I broke mine about 3 years ago and I did what I said above and haven't had any problems with the fuel system. ill take a pic.and post it shortly.

I haven't used a hinge as it sits under a carpet. I would be inclined to use hex head sheet metal screws down in the grooves so stuff would still slide easy.

Bypassed the part, used a compression fitting on the return line and barbs on the supply line. So if any body else comes across having to do this, if you purchase, like i did, a fuel line kit at a parts store (O'Reillys) there is two different sizes of line. 3/8 and 5/16. The original lines are 5/16 on my 88. Ran the original 5/16 supply line to the new 3/8 supply line using, 1/4 barb x 1/4 MIP-1/4 FIP-5/16 barb x 1/4 MIP. The part i used from the parts store is Quick Disconnect by Dorman part number 800-063. Hope this helps any body out there that come across the same problem i did. Thanks Dave2575.
 
Now I am confused. I have ran into an issue with this same part. But I was under the impression it is a bad idea to delete it.
