name that part

If it is a clean round hole use a short sheet metal screw or self-tapper and thread it in there- use one with a rubber washer. Either it will stop the leak or make it worse hee hee... The chances are better it will stop the leak.

Today I crawled under the truck (no jack stands) and pinpointed the leak! Sorry all you paper towels. It is oil coming out of a very small nail-head sized area of the oil pan. It looks almost slightly indented. What are my options besides replacing oil p[an. Drain oil, let it dry, degrease, sand down surface rust and apply some epoxy? Is it possible to do this without draining all the new oil? It's a constant drip so i imagine it needs to be oil free area.Just a general question. Do oil pans rust from the inside out? Do oil pans become porous as they get old. I'm just wondering if I fix this leak another will spring up.

As far as the mess in the engine, I will degrease and see better whats going on. Thanks to all

Epoxy needs a clean dry surface to bond to. My boss tried to patch the hydraulic tank on his tractor and the JB weld just fell off. If the pan is rusted to the point that it broke through in one place chances are it will happen again. Take a hammer and gently tap around the area to see if its still strong. If it is then drain the oil clean up the area and patch it, if not then you are probably better off replacing it.

Oil pans usually rust from the outside.

if you opt to use a sheet metal screw with a rubber washer also coat the threads with silicone prior to inserting. Some engines use plastic or aluminum oil pans & that said may be one more option if pan does need to be replaced. If you replace pan with another steel one coat the inside & outside with rubberized under coating. Make sure you allow enough time for it to of cured before reinstalling. Double check to make sure the brand of under coating wont be effected by oil or gas.
