Hi everyone, I think my 3.0 Ranger has developed a case of engine ping, but I wanted some opinions before I start pulling stuff apart, so I stuck my GoPro under the hood and captured the rattling sound that I've been hearing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3I8b6DDvII (for impatient people, the sound begins at around 0:33 in the video and ends at about 0:37).

This sound happens most frequently when the truck is cold, and usually when it's under a load trying to accelerate up a hill. If it is engine ping, do you guys have anything to add to the suggestions found here?

Thanks for the help,

Bryce

Sounds like pinging. You might try some high-octane fuel to see if that makes a difference. Check your plugs, looking for visible damage to the insulator. Check this page, http://www.wikihow.com/Read-a-Spark-Plug, for tips on examining the spark plugs especially point 4, "Be on the look out for small, black, pepper-looking spots on the nose, which indicate light detonation."
