My New House & Workshop

I always said I would do anything for a sandwich and a beer, but 1300 miles one way is a bit much.
It's all about the camaraderie, meeting your internet friends in person, helping somebody out, having fun, being part of a unique experience. You can't put a price on all that.

I can come if there’s nice weather (no snow) and if there are clean pickles.

its texas, doubt there will be snow. Id consider coming, would take 2 days drive for me either way though.

I don't think many Amish have made it to Texas.

You might be surprised... there are some in southern Colorado... I know I was surprised.

I thought Roanoke was in Virginia? And that doesn’t solve the pickle concern. Seriously, I’ve got property and Lucas and Plano I haven’t seen in 15 years, might be worth a trip. It’s only 12 hours from Atlanta

We could car-pool and share fuel costs. I would be going through Hotlanta anyway.

Big influx of Mennonites here from Canada.

Most of the Amish/Mennonites that I remember from Michigan... they drive power stroke diesels and have some really nice fishing boats. They might be willing to travel...

Amish people in Texas are called Mexicans.

Ok, I'm sorry. I couldn't resist.

It snows in Colorado?

Dirtman is in charge of pickles.

Roanoke use to be in Virginia but moved to Texas along with all the Californians.

Snow in Texas is a 4-letter word.

Sandwiches? Peanut butter and jelly for everyone!!

Hmmm, I don’t know about that. Are there going to be pickle handling and storage standards? Inspections?

And, I don’t mind the Mexicans, but if Californians are going to be there, I’m definitely going to have to reconsider. Could we set it up so they work on the left side of the house, and I work on the right side of the house?

35 years ago one of my projects was a 300,000 ft.² warehouse with tilt walls in Richardson. The slab was poured, and we were forming the tilt walls to be poured in sequence in the following days. I went out to inspect and oversee. In the middle of it, the roach coach came, and then one of the foreman came up to me and said I’m sorry, the border patrol is coming we’re going to have to leave work for a couple hours, but it’ll still be done today. I almost had a heart attack when I was informed a lot of the labor might not be legal.

Sure enough, border patrol came over the hill with squad cars and school buses.
Everybody took off running, some fast, some slow, in every direction. I thought of the area is flat, but these guys found plenty of places to hide. Well, the border patrol guys took out after him, and grabbed about 20 or 30 and brought them back to the school buses. Almost to a man, as they got to the steps of the school bus, they said “pardone”, and they pulled out a green card. It turned out that it was planned that all the illegals would run fast as hell and hide, and all the legals would also run, but they would run slowly. I think they ended up getting one guy. It all took about 30-40 minutes, and then everybody was back at work an hour later. It’s one of the damnedest things I’ve ever seen.

I was working in a factory out in California once, I was there to do operator training on a piece of equipment, came in on my second day there and 90% of the people were gone. Had no one left to train. There was a guy pushing a pallet jack around and I asked him where everyone was at, he said ICE had come in after I left and cleared house.

Well at least you have @fastpakr to help you out then.

It is nice when things work out like that.

18 hr 52 min (1,281 miles)
I'll need a couple days notice.

Be easier to learn to speak Spanish, than find Amish in Texas, I'm guessing.....

FWIW...

On a scale of one to ten with ten being great attention to detail and great quality:

Amish Workers = 9
Hispanic Workers that don't speak English = 3

As long as you're planning to be on the jobsite inspecting everything that's done, Hispanic Workers that don't speak English = 6

I'm a retired QA guy.

I had a pole barn built in Ohio by some Amish folks. It was a "Lester" building and I didn't find anything they did that wasn't built to the manufacturers specifications. Strict attention to detail. Great work ethic also.

After we moved to Colorado I was a QA guy in multiple manufacturing facilities in Colorado. The first place had about 80% illegal aliens working there that didn't speak any English. Everyday was a struggle getting these folks to build things per specifications. I quit after about a year.

The next place had a bunch of legal workers that spoke English. They did a fine job.
