My idea of a Shelby Ranger if there would have been one.

ok if everything is running well , give up the smoke before you sell !!!! I read all 129 pages !!!!! and NO SMOKE!!!!!!!! had 4 Dr.Peppers and a nap to get this far !!
Beautiful truck btw
I understand , but you do know that the truck is upset at no smoke , roast them babies a few times and she will be all good , you can't keep somehting like that bottled up for that long !!! if it helps I will paypal you 5 bux to waste in the tank for 1 teeny tiny smokeout .
I am a die hard Chevy man but currently own a Ranger and a Mountaineer. Trying to make the most out of the ranger.
seriously nice truck multi

I'll do a smoke show soon .. Ok so I ran the truck out of gas or at least until is sputtered once... (i had 3 gallons in a can to get home on) I went 279 miles on a full tank... That is horrible! I think the tank is 17 gallons or is it 18? BTW Thanks Bob!!

that's not THAT bad... that's better than i'm doing... i'm at about 300km and i've used 3/4 of my tank... that's less than 200 miles

Yeah but the same engine in the orig truck was at 400 miles per tank but it sat for 8 years or so before I drug it out of the pasture... So I'd like to get it somewhere close to that number again

I really hate to sound like a broken record, but I still think it's the ecu, do a reset and see how far you can get right after you reset it.

unhook the battery when you park the truck to keep the ecu cleared, and stuff, and see how far you get then, just don't let the ecu relearn the setting or what ever it does that cause's the bad mpg's, I hope you can under stand what I'm trying to type here.

maybe I am wrong , and maybe I missed it , Did you inspect that engine at all before you installed ? pull the head and what not ? pull the pan?
I read so much I cant remember if it was you that opened the head and sucked out a bunch of liquid?
the basic rule of thumb , dont over think it , go back to basics if overthinking gets you no where .
sticky lifter?
spun bearing?
stuck valve?

thats 16.4mpg thats not that bad.. unless your on the highway. im getting around that in my truck, before the new tires lord knows what i get now....

and dont give up you have an amazing truck.

Silent bob
After he does a reset on the computer, the truck gets around 24+ mpg's, and after the ecu gets to learn the engine the mpg's fall of to pretty bad.

I pulled the valve covers, and pan to install a new oil pump and timing chain. The engine was very clean inside.. As I have said before it runs really strong with no smoke and no oil usage.. I am going to run one more tank through with no working on it while it idles or has to sit and warm up so only gas being used is on the road.. The last tank did have some idle time from changing the thermostat and such... The next tank after this one I'll post a smokin video. I may go to pull a part and see if I can find an ECM but I just don't think I will find one used for a 92 4.0...

I searched for an ECU for a 1992 Ranger w/4.0L, 4x2 and AT. That first one on the list is right down the road from where I work (less than 5 miles). If you want to give them a call for more information (to make sure they still got it, and it is good) I'm sure we can work something out about getting it to you.

I don't think that would work where he has a 5 speed tranny, or does it matter on the transmission part????

fwiw, might be something to check... my truck's fuel mileage has been TERRIBLE! and it would trip a code here and there... it actually went a good month with no code, then set one about 2 weeks ago, i finally got around to fixing it... one of the 2 white wires on my bank 2 sensor 2 02, is more or less missing...

i know obd II and eec-iv throw CEL lights for different reasons, i could have codes in the computer on my 89 mustang (eec-iv) but no CEL, clear the codes, the car ran great again!

so you might have something like a bad o2... mine was "stuck lean" and it ran great, even had good power, just sucked the fuel back... i'm looking forward to seeing the new mileage after resetting everything...
