My idea of a Shelby Ranger if there would have been one.

Love the build, Congrats on a great truck. I learned a lot from this thread including why my taillights aren't working

Thanks Country! It's awesome to hear my build helped out with an issue on someone's ride!!

Ok after reading and doing some research and seeing the price of a turbo used... I have been bitten by the compressed air bug.... only thing.. I want to keep the headers and refuse to cut any of my splash shields or have exhaust pipes cluttering my engine compartment... Can it be done? I'm not looking for anything too radical just a slight boost.

Do the one where the turbo replaces the muffler, then all you have to do is run a oil line and oil return, and a tube to the intake.

like the one that Trucks did on the red Ford truck.

There is a supercharger kit offered for the 4.0, and from what I've read, because the 4.0 is a distributorless ignition system, it is real difficult to turbo one. I don't know why exactly. But there is a supercharger kit available for the 4.0 to feed your compressed air bug!

Yeah I know about the Knight 4.0 SC.. Way out of my price range! I have to do it on the cheap.. Prolly the reason it makes it difficult is timing.. I have no idea though..

This setup is what I was thinking but I figured it would have major turbo lag.

Other than a Turbo Coupe I had I am lost on the subject. really my knowledge of it was it would smoke the hell out of a z28...

I am open to opinions, facts , and ideas!!

Then use a smallish turbo, and dont put the turbo all the way back by the muffler, put it straight after the y pipe or cats if you still have them, its half the distance.

I'm not for sure, but if you put them too far back, you have run a oil pump to pump the oil to them, or it, but if I was going to turbo one, that is the set up I would use, and also use the least amount of bends that you can get away with.

All that makes sense.. I saw a twin Turbo set up that put the turbos all the way behind the rear tires.. Just seems too far back..

I think I read smaller ones spool faster :dunno:

Thats what Stacy did on Gearz, when he twin turboed the corvette.

also what is the upside to useing the twin I-beams from a second gen ranger in a first gen ranger??

Not sure if it is better or not.. But 2nd gen uses more of a normal ball joint. My guess is Gen 1 uses a king pin... Dream beams for a second generation is cheaper and the brakes I think may be better not sure on that one though... I always thought the beams were the same until I saw them at the JY on Saturday..

exactly:icon_thumby:...it takes less pressure need to turn a smaller turbine...equals less turbo lag, also power quicker, just not as much as a BIG FUDGIN' TURBO.

what multi said, but IIRC gen 3 I beams have two piston calipers as apposed to a gen 1&2's 1 piston caliper.

Great job on the STOTM should've happened months ago. Have you decided on where to exit the exhaust yet. My vote is for a burnout vid. Just gotta love the sound of screaming tires.

turbo

Ok I am not a turbo gueru but my friend and I put a turbo from a ups truck on his wifes 93 geo storm. What I learned is it can be anywhere in the exhaust flow but the closer to the manifold the quicker the spool up. After mid shipe will need a booster pump on the feed side of oil lines. Only need 1-2psi just to keep flow from airaiting. That said my opinion for best results would be to use a small spool from a turbo volvo 850. they only measure 4.5" across and mount with a ball socket style flange. with the right tuning they are capable of around 15# of boost. With the mounts they use you should be able to conect right to your headers without losing much ground clearence. They also come out in only 2-2.5 inch to intake. On a stock motor I would limit it to no more than 9# of boost. Where the biggest problem will be in sensor programing. Have to find out what iat flow is for the 4.0 and maf pressure limits. But it is very do able and I would try it. Has to be easier than the one we did on the geo. That required major work to the heads, including adding a extra plug to the cylinders, but it was fun a geo that could grab rubber in all five gears. Oh btw we were just supposed to be putting a clutch in it. Good luck
