The wife, kids and I came home Saturday to find our Golden Retriever laying at the front door when we went in. He's usually standing there all excited to see us. For some reason he couldn't get up and acted like his back leg was broke because he couldn't move it. He was dragging his leg trying to get up. My wife noticed he was drooling real bad and when I knelt down to look at him he had a blank look in his eyes. He started flopping around on the floor and I tried to keep him from hitting his head on the wall or floor. It was pretty scary. After a couple of minutes he was fine and back to his usual happy self.

Anyone ever have experience with dogs that have seizures?

We had a wire-hair fox terrier that was subject to seizures. He slopt on the top step of the stairs going from the basement to the 1st floor. When he'd have one, he'd go all stiff & then start to twitch. Sometimes he'd fall through the step to the concrete floor below. It never seemed to hurt him, after a few minutes he'd get up, shake himself off, & return to normal.

A friend of mine had a little bassit hound that would have really short seasures. It seemed she'd hit the floor and be up and fine again in a second.

Scary stuff

I had a cat that would have seizures. I believe we put him on phenylbarbital. Went from three or four a day to one every two years. But I had to cram a pill down his throat twice a day.

Our original vet didn't want to put him on it. Even after seeing a seizure in person. I don't recall his reason, but I suppose there can be big drawbacks, and I don't know if it'll work on dogs. We never saw any side-effects other than no more seizures.

Sorry to hear about your pup Jim. I have no experience with dogs and seizures. Put I do have a couple of friends that get them. Either way it is scary and unnerving.

my wife has those when in a diabetic low, piece of candy shoved in her mouth and in 10 minutes she is alert and asking what happened.

Hi,Jim the wife and I have experienced with our Rat Terrier. It is not a good sight. She has them very rarely though. I think hers came from a bump on the head. And it seems to get triggered from excitement.Mike

I had a Pit mix that was seizure prone. I had to give her phenobarbital . I put in a glob of peanut butter so she would eat it. It helped a lot.

It freaked me out the first time I saw her have a seizure. She arched her back like a pissed off cat and walked sideways for a couple of minutes.

Same thing happened to my girlfriends terrier, they had to feed it pills for a while, 1 or 2 a day for 2-3 months. I don't think it's on them anymore, and I haven't seen it seizure in over a year now, so I'd say it worked. Sorry to hear it though, I know how ya feel when ya see it.

jim i am from cleveland and have had supurb luck with my animals that have had special needs through our vet. (west park animal hospital). we have a schnauzer that has white shaking dog syndrome and they put increadable amounts of time into figuring out what was wrong. these people worked very hard to enshure we knew what to expect from our puppy and how to best deal with it. i feel your concern and whole heartedly hope it is a one time occurance and that it can be treated! i hope it dosent disrupt your holiday season to much! best of wishes jim and happy holidays!

My mother had a Schnauzer that had seizures. Whenever ho got scared, he went rigid and passed out. The clippers used during a haircut scared him enough to make him pass out. Funny as hell after the vet pronounced him completely healthy.
I'm sorry you have that issue with your canine family member. Hope he is okay.

Seems like this is a pretty common thing. Sorry Jim. I do have some experience with dogs doing this, you usually put them on phenobarbital. Not sure if they've come out with anyhting else yet.
