My 87 Ranger I will be restoring soon I want to keep track of my progress and add information as I find it.

The rear bumper was a bust but I did get a bit of good luck. Found a guy on marketplace and his nephew had an abandoned Ranger extended cab on his property from’96. It is a rust bucket. He is tired of the tire kickers and seen I am restoring my Ranger. He is a Chevy gear head and had several older model Chevys so no use for a Ranger.
My hood had hail damage, a sliding back glass and lumbar seats. I am also buying another set of same seats. He did not want these to go to waste.

A nice grill , door panels and bezel.

Nice sun visors, fuse panel cover better then what I have currently, dash trim, windshield visor, brush guard, and something I did not know is a sun cover for the extended cab back seats.

New Wiper handle

I seen somewhere on a thread to upgrade to a larger bottom tray. I wish I would have made a note on it. I got this hold diem from Orielly. I had to re work cables but got battery done for now.

Battery tray was me. 87-90ish F series tray. Remove what is left of yours and leave the brace. Drill a hole in the tray to bolt it to the brace and two holes in the inner fender and it bolts in.

@85_Ranger4x4 Thanks!!! I knew I seen it somewhere and I still am not the best about getting around the site and finding information. I appreciate it.

I
If all goes well, I will be owning this seat and another just like it. That will make two sets of these I will have. I should be buying possibly a rebuilt transmission for the Bronco2. Possibly a rust free bed as well

I got my AC recharged after the hose blew off. I was in the boneyard and every Ranger and Bronco I seen did not have the safety clip. I hope the one I have on will hold it from separating again. It is blowing colder than before. Condensation on the dryer.

There is a thread of New tools you bought. Should be a thread of New tools you bought and have not used. I also have a HF Sandblaster I still have not used. I have this Pressure Can for Brake Cleaner and not used it once. I Seafoamed the Intake with it. Sometimes it idles erratic so I cleaned IAC and put a can in the tank, Truck was idling great and while running I went to connect air breather assembly and started idling erratic again.

Not that I am expecting any big results with a new air filter as my old one is clean. I try using the best parts available.
IMG_4379.jpeg

17 sheets of 80 grit sand paper just to get scaling and rust off. Got some Muriatic Acid on it currently to kill the rust.

Looks like a bullet stuck in it. Not one in the other side. Hmmm?

Questions

Question 1. Are Manual Transfer cases the same for automatic trucks? I found one and might convert Bronco to manual case.
Question 2. Would K&N be a better filter over Wix?
If you guys have any suggestions for best parts, please let me know.
Question 3 I see that an 88 computer basically is an upgrade over the 86/87 just because of EGR. These trucks were the first years of computer. I don’t think computers would know difference between manual or automatic transmission. Is that correct?

1) yes
2) I like paper filter
3) I believe there is a different idle strategy between the two. You can use either but I think a cel pops up. On my 86 there is no cel from the factory, so I would never see a cel anyway if I changed computers.

The actual meat and taters of it yes.

The linkages can vary depending on transmission, some t-cases may need the little lever on the t-case swapped and not all of them are removable.

If you find a 1354 T case out of a '90 or newer Ranger/Explorer there is no linkage difference on those but you would have to grab the front driveline out of what you get it out of but it'll bolt in...

But its linkage is completely different than the couple of variants the 1350... so you can't play mix and match that way.

Yes, that... and I should have clarified the M5OD and A4LD are the same, I don't know if the TK's they used through '92 behind 2.9L's are interchangeable... There were several transmission lengths through the 80's with different front driveline lengths and those dang different shift linkages but they got more standard by the '90's

That's exactly what I have going on now. The 1354 has an offset lever to clear the double cardan joint. My 1350 was straight and so the lever doesn't meet the new one. Gonna have to cut and weld. :icon_welder:

@alwaysFlOoReD I found a guy parting an 86 or 87 and it has the manual tcase. My bronco has the push button and auto hubs. If I can get them to work I would like too but I do prefer manual tcase and manual hubs much better. The reason I asked on the air filters is my bike has the K&N but it is need to tune it for a higher flow as bikes are lean from the factory. I don't think a high flow filter would really help these trucks out power wise.

@85_Ranger4x4 Thanks for the links on the tcase. The way the bronco is fighting me I am sure it will take me into another realm I was not counting on. This is an 86/87 case I may be getting as the guy is tired of tire kickers. I really would like to keep it all original, but I have experienced problems with automatic or push-button four-wheel drives in the past.

@scotts90ranger Ford is still behind the times on getting standard on their trucks. Thanks for the information on the newer style trucks. I will keep that in mind if I have to go that route. Something I would have had to learn the hard way of not getting the drive line. The boneyards are quite a way from me.

@SenorNoob Thanks Ford for keeping it simple, Lol I would not be surprised to see me go down that road. I have a welder, but I am a first class screw up when it comes to welding. Luckily, I have a couple of friends that can weld.

Got the bulket covered in body filler and the rest of the brush guard in about as good of a shape as it is going to get. A lot of work involved in it.
IMG_4388.jpeg

I was all excited to get it installed and the one bumper bolt that has been on the list to get replaced bit me in the rear. I think I need longer bolts fit the bottom anyways and I have to remove the bumper pad to get it to bolt on. Eventually I want to get one of my friends to weld a tube that goes around the headlights ti protect the grille.

I was at the boneyard today. I got a distributor for the Bronco. I think I want to go flat black in these mirrors for my truck. Most are chrome. I think black would look batter. Any thoughts on this?

IMG_4402.jpeg

I found another great grille, so I grabbed it. Also got an 88 computer to see if it is my trucks idle problem. Sometimes it idles great, other times a little rough for a moment. I have cleaned sensors and replaced a couple if them.
IMG_4400.jpeg

Of course, someone did not know to remove blinker lenses to replace head lights. I see so many different brands say they are the strongest glue. I’m giving this two parts epoxy a chance.
