My first Ranger had a cab that I referred to as "A River Runs Through It"...I didn't know much about these trucks then but soon discovered that the windshield drip tray/air vent is a problem area in Canada...the road spray loaded with salt gets in there and starts dinning on the metal and before you know it...a river runs through it...
Anyway, could be a number of places where it comes in and not always due to rust. If you are running coolant in the system you would know that it was a coolant leak just from the smell...so likely a leak from either the firewall, windshield, or drip tray...none of these are an easy fix usually, but if it is small enough and you load it up with silicone or other sealant it might go away...but that may or may not stop the rust...
