I needed to replace some fuel lines and fuel filter. It was running rough. So after I did that,
I tried starting it.

Then it kept cranking without me turning the key!!!!

WHY!!!!

Is it a bad starter? Coil? Any ideas??

starter solenoid on the pass. side inner fender. follow the positive cable from the battery and you will find it.

smack it with a hammer and if doesnt help, replace it.

+1 I agree with blackwidow, smack it with a hammer........ If it fixes it, great!!!! If you hit it and it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway!!!!

IT DID work.lol Then it started doing the same thing a few cranks later.

Now its running pretty rough. Makes a bad 'CLANK" sometimes when I try to start it. Scares the sheet outta me. I keep thinking a rod is gonna go thru the engine. Guess I need someone to crank it while I try to see what is making that sound. The clutch is slipping. Could that have something to do with it?

Oh, and when it does start, it start to die out on me. Me and my buddy, who died a few months ago(RIP Dylan Andrews) used to work on this old truck all the time. He would always say that I need to replace that dam carb w/ an Edelbrock. I always let him 'rebuild it' though. I think that carb is on it's last leg. Anyone think its a good idea to put an Edelbrock carb on it. At least for him. I want to keep this ol truck running

Mine did this a couple of times...almost always the starter solenoid...just replace it and it should clear it up...but be careful when tightening the nuts...one of the reasons the starter keeps engaging is because it is arching out through the solenoid and the little piece between the two nuts is flimsy plastic that breaks (especially if you whack it with a hammer) leading to easier arching between the two leads...

I found using an open ended wrench could lead to breakage, so I started using a #10 socket instead...and...avoid trying to tighten them too tight...because I've also found one of the pegs snapped off by doing that...

Otherwise, it's a fairly easy fix...

1/4 drive ratchet. It's hard to get enough torque on one of those babies to snap them :)

Thanks. Plan on buying a new starter solenoid from Advance today. Good price on it. Like $20.00. Seems easy to install too or am I just being modest?

True...or do it with your fingers...:)

It's an easy install...two bolts usually hold it on the inner fender...and just the two nuts to remove the wires...and you should also have a little red or black boot that goes on one of the posts...the bottom one usually...

Only caveat is there are two solenoids that can be purchased and they are similar...except one has two posts and the one you need should only have one post...IIRC...
