My $40 paint job! :)

I guess this is the first time I've posted any pictures of my truck on the forum..

We (my loving fiance' and I) painted it a few weeks ago, but never got around to posting up the pics.

It looks 100% better now then it did before. I don't think I have any before shots, but it was multi-colored light blue before. I didn't do much body work, fixed the rust on the cab corners and over the wheel wells.

The paint is Krylon Satin Black. I used about 11 cans. Didn't come out too shabby. I need to go back over it with some steel whool to knock down the overspray and bug carcasses.

It'd look even BETTER if you were to sand it down with some 800 and redo the paint again.

Clearcoat would be what I'd do afterall that work too.

yeh thats pretty good for rattle cans. A buddy of mine painted his ford fiesta with a roller...

Because of the straight lines it turned out pretty well for what materials and effort he put into it. (BTW he probably washed it before, no prep work.)

sweet, now how bout mine, j/k, looks good, i wouldn't go 800 but definitely some scotch brite pads medium grade and water then another coat chased with some real fine steel wool/or fine like 1600wet/dry and a couple coats clear and that job would look SICK.

J/K, looks good to me. You'll be surprised how much it'll improve with minimal work. Do the tailgate by hand while you watch tv. That'll inspire ya. I'd use a power buffer.

Diggin' the satin, don't clearcoat that.

Not too shabby indeed. In fact pretty damn good for a rattle can paint job. I'd do a coat or 2 of clear to give it a shine but other than that it's beautiful.

I gotta tell ya, it's the paint. I've always used the generic store brand rattlecans, but the Krylon covers so well and so smooth. One coat is all it really took. Plus the nozzle gives you a nice fan pattern that you can rotate for horizontal or vertical spray..

This was our second Krylon experiance BTW..

A buddy of ours has done a few cars with this paint, one of which has held up to the texas sun for two years so far.

if you have a compressor, you can buy a $20 spray gun, and tractor supply paint for $20 a gallon... works awesome, but gets dull after about 2 years. did it to my old ranger, an escort, my sunbird and my grandfathers truck. i use only the good paint for my current ranger.

p.s. dont use sandpaper! it will peel off the paint! use a claybar or buff the b'jesus out of it.

I know it's an old thread but my paint is crap. I can't afford a real paint job, and can't paint it with a gun since I live in an apartment. But, can I get good results with spray paint? I was thinking a flat olive green or a glossy blue, white, or another color. What steps would I have to take to make it look like it was sprayed down with a gun? Thanks

I painted a 75 Firebird with rattlecan and had friends tell me I was full of it, that it was gun sprayed.

My procedure - sand the base coat that is there already and repair ALL scratches or anything that would stand out. Prime - 3 light coats, with full cure and wet sand to 320 in between. Final coat was 3 coats as well and cured/wet sand to 320 between coats. Final - 2 - 3 coats of clear or you can spray a nice smooth coat on top color on last and do not sand - permitting no runs or bugs in top coat.
I was really surprised at this method and how it worked. Lasted a good while also - paint was Krylon also. Remember - a local paint shop can mix special colors and then get you a refillable sprayer - like a rattle can but can spray added paint with a can of compressed air - may cost more that way though.

nice job! i like the satin look as well. KRYLON does make a satin clearcoat if you want a protective coat over the black, but keep the same look.

Could I also use spray paint to paint my canopy?

A PS can be done but would be difficult to make it look like a satin finish. The colors can be changed, but not a specific sheen and look good. Put a request in the PS forum . . .

When doing a satin finish I would prep and do everything the same, just use a satin color coat on the final coat with no sanding. Or get a clear satin and spray that last.

Yes your cap can be painted, just take the time to prep, prime and go slow. 90% of ANY paint job is in the PREP. A smooth clean base = a nice finish.
