I'll do it myself
I have a 90 ranger with 4.0 and a4ld. It's been slow about going into 4th gear for a long time but now I is getting too bad. I've been thinking about rebuilding it for a long time. Now I'm at the point where I better do it or I"ll be too old. I also think I should just sale it as is. I don't need it anyway. One of the biggest hurdles was removing the Y pipe. I could just see myself breaking fasteners at the Y pipe and then breaking more of them at the exhaust manifold. So, is it necessary to remove the Y pipe to drop the transmission?

Maybe take the truck to an exhaust shop and get them to do the work of removing and replacing the y first. T you know its not going to break. Or just cut the y under the trans and fix with corrugated exhaust repair piece. Corrugated will only last a year or two.

Croatankid,

I know that I've pulled these trannies without removing the "Y" pipe. I did remove the cat and muffler to make room, even that may not be necessary, though I have done it everytime.
