In 2008 Ford changed the T-case fluid to this XL-12 stuff which you can only get at Ford. Used to use Mercon ATF.

Any one know what the difference is or why. It is the same t-case, right?

XL-12 is basically Merc with some limited slip friction modifier in it. It's for the magnetic clutch that spins up the front output stuff for a smoother rolling engagement.

Regular ATF will be fine in the t-case, but t-case fluid will toast a trans. Smells like a dead rotten burning skunk in July.

Well, since I am older than, well old, I have always stopped to engage that front stuff, so I guess it really doesn't matter if I don't use that new stuff.

Thanks, Ed
