my daughters 1999 3.0 ranger had 225000 and was knocking so i bought a 2006 taurus motor with 60000 miles and replaced everything from the ranger the only think i did not change was the harmonic balancer. it starts but won't stay running. I have tried the cam synchronizer in every position and it runs the same i set the engine to TDC with the 0 on the harmonic balancer aligned with the timing mark on the timing chain cover, on compression stroke. I installed the sensor, using the alignment tool, at 38 degrees and i reset the computer by grounding the leads together when it is disconnected from the battery. it is not throwing any codes but it will not stay running i put a new fuel pump in. I can spray cleaner down the intake and it will run which continues to lead me to beleive it is not getting fuel and is pointing me back to the synchronizer can anybody help me?

Unplug the MAF and see how it runs.

Also, if you didn't change the head gaskets to ones for a Ranger you are going to cook that engine.

Yes, Taurus/sable 3.0l Vulcan engines were transverse mounted so coolant circulated from back to front of engine then out to rad
Rangers need coolant circulated front to back and then back to front, so head gasket design was different.

Cam synchro sensor could cause a no start on some 3.0l computers, but not a stall after startup.

Crank sensor is the main sensor for spark and injector timing, Cam sensor was added to fine tune sequential fuel injection.

And if engine starts and continues to run if you add fuel manually then Crank sensor is just fine.

Yes, try running without MAF sensor, also unplug TPS(throttle position sensor) it can disable injectors on startup.

Taurus did come with 3.0l Duratec engine some years, 2005 was last I think, and it wouldn't work in a Ranger
