what is the best bang for buck on getting more power, i was thinking of regearing i already have a cat back exhaust, any ideas

air intake, then chip, gears don't make power and it hurts highway MPG. pm me for an air intake

curt

gears dont make power, they multiply torque...which is percieved as faster acceleration (more power).

running your engine near its peak torque figure will provide the highest fuel economy figures. for the 4.0 thats 3,000 RPM. depending on your current gear ratio and tire size, you could see an INCREASE in highway fuel economy with a deeper gear.

stay away from so called "cold intake" kits. your factory intake is already cold air and already flows more than your engine can draw. id give you the same warning for exhaust systems, but you already have one. e-fans also offer no advantage over a properly functioning clutch fan.

being that your truck is OBDII, i would look into a tuner to modify the PCM's programming.

+1.

Going lower in gearing really woke the acceleration up on my truck. Of course, the engine HP is the same, but all my tranny gears were moved down into a more "useful" range.

Cold air intakes for an RBV are a scam. As Sludge said, the stock intake is already CAI, and it flows plenty of air for even a V8 302 (in fact the same filter size is used).

ok i already put a home made air intake on it and it did give me a better sound which is really what i was looking for, it costed me around 20 bucks so i think it was worth it, how much do u think regearing would cost, and like u said torque is what i am looking for i want to be able to get a good jump off the line, im not racing it or anything but i want to be able to impress people, besides the chip is there any other way to get more power and torque such as switching out the cam, turbo, supercharge?

if your homemade air intake uses an exposed filter or otherwise allows warm engine compartment air to seep into the filter (removed snorkel, holes drilled in the airbox, etc), it is costing you power.

the cost of gearing will vary. if you have 3.73's or down, you could try to locate a 4.10 axle from the junkard and swap it under your truck for under $200. if you already have 4.10's or want to go deeper than that then you have to buy the gears and have someone set them up. the gears and labor will usually run under $500 per axle.

you have two cams and as far as i know there are no performance cams for that engine. you could have your stock cams reground, but the cost will be high and the resulting power increase will be low.

forced induction is really the only way to go if your looking for serious power increases. keep in mind this entails a lot more than just bolting the blower/turbo on...including fuel system mods and computer tuning.

could u give me any help about forced induction and how i could go about doing that, got any links or anything that could help me cuz i have no idea what im doing with that kind of stuff

hit google and the 4.0 section in the tech library. there are kits and tons of info on it already posted on the subject.

yes K&N make a product that is worth nothing. okay sure;) the factory is by far the best in everyway, don't change anything

thanks for your useful input.

just because a product exists doesnt mean it works. i suppose you buy every gimick you see under the assumption that "if it didnt work, it wouldnt exist". so hows that tornado working out for you? used your shamWOWs lately?

the factory intake is already a true cold-air intake that uses a filter which is completely sealed off from the engine compartment. the stock intake tube is made of ABS plastic, which is a good insulator. most K&N kits use an exposed cone filter with a little plastic baffler that exposes the intake to warm engine compartment air. many also use a metal intake tube, which is quite effective at soaking up engine heat, thus warming the intake charge (but it sure looks pretty). the filter element used in the stock intake is the same surface area as the one used in v-8 mustangs which make 44% more power than the 4.0.

do some reasearch before you speak. you cant believe everything you read in magazines.

I certainly wouldn't cruise around in a 4.0 at 3000RPMs, SOHC or not, no way it will get it's best economy there. 4.0s seem to like 2100-2400 the best.
