Is there anything specific that can be done to increase torque in the low and mid range?

Heavier flywheel.

Put in a bigger engine. lol

I guess I set my self up for that one. :D

How would the fly wheel increase torque? Wouldn't it just help keep the engine at a steadier rpm during shifts?

The flywheel is an energy storage device. It stores momentum to help the engine get through the space between the end of one power stroke and the start of the next. A heavy flywheel does this better than a light one because it takes more force to stop it. That in turn helps to increase the available torque low in the RPM range by helping the engine push through when the power strokes are farther apart.

So this would help in 2/3/4, but not in first gear, right?

Regear lol

I agree, Ford liked to put 3.08:1 gears in these little 4 cylinder trucks, going to 3.73:1 would be a nice step, and shouldn't hurt anything... speedo will probably read fast though...

What engine are we working with anyway?

A 352 oz heavy duty flywheel would help.

It depends on which motor you have, but there basically aren't too many upgrades you can do for any of the motors. If, say, you have a 4.0L, going with a set of headers, a cam, and longer pushrods would be cool. Do you have a budget? Do you do mostly city driving?

If you just want a little bit of grunt, getting new rearend gears would be a sensible choice. It might even be cheaper to swap in a junkyard axle with the gears that you want.

*shrugs* You've gotta be more specific, man.

This is in the 4-cylinder forum, so I would be guessing a 4-cylinder. lol

True, but if he has a 2.3 then a 2.5 swap would be a good start.

If his truck is older a turbo job might be worth looking into.

Surrey has the right idea. The thread is in the lima section so a safe bet is that i have a 2.3/5. The engine is a 93 2.3. I'll be doing 90/10 highway/city driving and about half of that will be with 2 guys and 3-500lb's in the bed, so about 8-900lbs total. I would like to turbo in the future but since I have a very limited budget right know it wont be happening just yet. How noticeable would a 8.8 with the next up gears be? How many 8.8's came stock with a lsd?

Oh, and scotts90ranger, re gearing wont change the speed reading. It takes the reading from the wheels not the tranny/axle as far as i know. And if you don't mind me asking, how much did that turbo setup run you?

I agree that rear gears would be one of the best/cheapest to do...it obviously won't improve on the engine specs, but a stroker kit would give you plenty of low end grunt...I'd suggest both...gears first and then stroker rebuild...

But all in all...you will probably spend as much or more than a V6 or V8 mod...only real benefit is you might lose some weight by spending so much on your truck that you won't have enough for food (hmmmm...why does this sound familiar...lol).
