So, I finally got around to pulling the Ranger ('89 XLT SC 4x4) in front of the garage to pull the trans and find out why there is no go in 5th gear. I found a bunch of damage to the 5th gear syncro hub surface, on both sides of 5th gear and the shift fork worn down on one surface pretty badly. Fifth gear was cracked and separated at the syncro end. Looks like there was a bit of heat involved with all this. The thrust washer and main shaft nut faces had deep gouges in them too. The 5th gear syncro hub had been rubbing against the 5th gear cross shaft gear. It appeared that the main shaft nut had backed off a little. Would this have caused the failure of 5th gear?
I just want to know if there is something else I need to consider before I spend the money to put it back together. I rebuilt the tranny myself and feel I did a very good job. There are not that many miles on the rebuild and the rest of it looks good with no slop in the input shaft to indicate abuse. Thanks for any input.
