I'm new to this site and could use some help from some of the gurus. I just bought a 2000 Ford ranger sport v6 4.0 2wd and I'm getting a check engine light and my Speedo wasn't working either. So after grabbing a bite to eat and getting some gas and getting to the house I started pulling fuses and realized there was a fuse missing. I put a fuse in and the Speedo started working. I still have the light. I went to advanced auto and got the truck scanned and the vehicle speed sensor was the only code. I understand how the VSS functions but could the lack of a fuse cause the light? Do I have to clear the code? I'm confused.. I don't know wether to clear the code or look into replacing the VSS? I posted this in brakes because the ABS light is on also.. How can I clear the code? If I clear the codes and it pops up again. I know the VSS is the culprit. There's to many variables for me to make an accurate decision. Any help would be appreciated.

Must have been one of the fuses for the GEM module, the GEM relays speed data from the PCM to the instrument cluster, but your wipers probably wouldn't work either.

I got it figured out the fuse blew for it. No check engine light anymore. For anyone reading. Its the bottom right fuse in the box on the side of the dash. Replace that before you replace your VSS.

FWIW, check your manual before you replace "the bottom right fuse" on my 96 and 97, the fuse blocks are laid out differently... wondered why replacing the fuse for where the dome lights are in the 96 didn't fix them in the 97... different block

Fair enough. I figured the others could take the lead in using their brain. Common sense isn't so common.
