OK, got a check engine light today when I fired up the Ranger.
Took it down and got the codes read it have a miss fire on cylinder 5. Picked up some plugs and wires, got to get those E3's out of there, but kind of think that's really not going to fix the problem. So that probably leaves the coil pack or injectors.

So what's the consensus on the best coils to use?
Also, being an 18 wheeler for more years than I care to remember, I've learned swapping just 1 injector is never the way to go. So whats the best type of injectors to get and where the best place to get them should it come to that?

Oh, it's a 2000 3.0L Flex fuel 5 speed.

E-3 plugs suck bawls, ditch them and get all OEM stuff. I know people try to say that OEM is junk and this and that and blah blah blah, it is what the system was designed to have, it's what will work best.

It has been my experience that 3.0 injectors rarely go bad. At the current age of your truck and the assumed mileage I would go whole hog on the tune up. Coil pack, 6 plugs, wire set and a new fuel filter (I don't think the filter is the root cause, or even contributing, it is just good maintence).

I agree. You can only change one injector, not the same as a diesel if it's bad. I'd swap all of the above parts adsm08 said with factory stuff, then add some hard core injector cleaner to the tank before changing the injector. Seafoam might work, I prefer 44k. They rarely go bad, but sometimes they do get dirty...

Thanks guys.
Yea, I've never been a big fan of stuff mags and car shows try to push, and I've found factory original usually works as good if not better. I've done the fuel filter and went back to original plugs and it helped but still not great. But it does have 144k miles so I'd have to agree the coil pack probably needs changed to. My son did new wires when he did the E3's but at the price they'll get changed to.
Thanks again
Keith

bet its a bad injector, they can be cleaned (mine were at around 150K) just replaced all this summer when had miss that could not be ID'd. took it to shop, they verified all I had done was good, just a miss they could not figure out. said injectors were ok but not the best. anyhow went to autozone and bought theirs for around $35 each replaced all 6. guess what the miss went away. BTW had changed ALL ignition stuff, coil pack, wires, plugs (2 sets), crank sensor, the sensor on the radiator support (all were OEM 1994!). with 300K on the engine figured it was time to replace everything and did, still the miss till the injectors were done. AZ will price match orielly thus they are selling sorenson injectors vs whatever oriellys sells. this summer spent around $1000 on the truck with around $500 in labort to boot at the shop. new timing chain and gears just installed, I did head gaskets as I thought they had one blown (not) no headwork, just R&R gaskets, put new valve seals on while off. It turns out the water leak was from the timing chain cover gasket! thus the timing chain and $250 to be R&R plus parts. So now I again have a good running truck, next time will be a rebuilt engine and trans. but again at 310000 I have no complaints.

Well I did a basic tuneup on the old girl, plugs/wires/coil pack along with the fuel filter and the sensors I had already cleaned and she runs a LOT better. It idles smooth and no more codes, at least not yet. So think I'm going to call it good for now.
But I'd have to say the biggest change came from swapping out the E3's. So if anyone's interested I'd say do NOT use those things.

Thanks again
Keith
