Mild Power From 302.......

I have an '86 302 thats a carburated motor, and i was wondering if the gt40 heads work on a carbureted motor and if I will gain anything noticable or if i'm gonna change cam later if a different head would be better?

If you have an 86 HO motor with the factory "no valve relief flat topped pistons", you'll be moving into piston to valve issues with the head swap. Not only are the larger valve sizes going to come into play, but you're also moving the valves closer to the pistons by a full 1/8". The valves on the 86's motor(E6SE castings) are sunk deeper into the heads by that amount vs all other SBF heads.

For a good 302 with lots of torque run the GT40X heads. If you can't find a good deal on the X heads then go with the GT40P heads off an explorer or 93 cobra. Then run a trickflow stage 1 cam with a GT40 intake and you really only need 24lb injectors.. Best setup for tons of torque and descent power without breaking the bank. Whatever you do do not run the F cam. First of all it is designed for a supercharger or turbo and bigger cubes. I hated that cam and I had it on a built 347 with AFR heads and RPM II intake. Only reason why I got it was because I was going turbo.

The F-cam is a great cam and I have used it many of times on my own Stang and a few customers engines that I have built. Yes the F-cam responds very well to forced induction (Turbo, Supercharger) but it works well N/A also and is one of my favorite cams to use. I do not like the TFS cams as they have all had surgging issues and they are designed to work best with TFS heads so if you have TFS heads then go for it. The TFS cams used to be reconmended for carburated engines but now say Calibrated mass airflow meter required. Its your engine so do the research yourself and decide from there. :icon_thumby:

86 Engine= leave alone or find a newer one to build.

Tons of other 302's to be had man. the junkyards should have plenty for you. If you want to get crazy, that's the best place to go. Get an engine for dirt cheap, either run it or upgrade the hell out of it.

Personally, I'd tear it down, rebuild it and have fun. Cam and heads should bring a bigger smile to you in the end.

As I was typing this, I was also browsing stroker kits... and came across this logo:

So im takin it that I should tear my engine down put a new set pistons in an go from there?

Anyone have a clue on headers/manifolds I could run with a 351W in a 4x4?

If that was a direct response to my reply, I was making a suggestion on what to do to a junkyard 302, as in tearing it down and rebuilding/upgrading. I was adding to what fordmike1 said, towards ford1386. Just wanted to clarify.

However, if you want more power, dial 3-3-1 (look for 331 stroker kits)
