I was hanging out with my one of my mechanic buddies today. I have a 1998, which requires the Mercon V trans fluid. My mechanic buddy said MERCON AND MERCON V are exactly the same EXCEPT THE MERCON V IS SYTHETIC VERSUS REGULAR MERCON BEING MINERAL(CONVENTIONAL). I change fluid every year. I put about 2-4 thousand on the truck per year. He said I am perfectly fine using Mercon.

Any truth to this or verification?

Thanks.

NO NOT TRUE. Use only Mercon V!! Mercon V has different friction modifiers in it that affect the way the trans shifts.

You can use mercon V inplace of mercon, but not the other way around.

Haha...I posted didn't matter and then by the time I saved, two other guys said cannot. OK, I defer to them, but for me, I would have gone along with your buddy.

And FYI my 92 f150 trans started life with mineral aft only for ford to later call for synthetic...I can't see how I would have a big problem if I went back to mineral...that's what it was originally designed to use...whatever.

Good luck!

Mercon V is NOT synthetic. The newer transmission are designed to use Mercon V. Mercon SP is full synthetic, along with Mercon LV.

From ford, mercon has be replaced by mercon V.

You can go back to regular Mercon in your trans, because that is what it originally came with and was designed for. The OP's trans however, is designed for Mercon V and cannot accept regular Mercon.

The reason Ford later said to use Mercon V is because Mercon V supercedes regular Mercon. It's redundant to have both fluids when 1 of them will suit every trans. Ford now no longer recognizes regular Mercon, it's an obsolete spec. Even though you can still buy regular Mercon, it is no longer Ford licensed or approved.

Mercon V is a synthetic blend! Previous poster was correct, Mercon applications can use Mercon V, but Mercon should not be used in Mercon V applications!

No where on the motorcraft chemicals site does it say anything about it being synthetic Bob.

ALL Mercon V (Motorcraft, Castrol, Valvoline, etc.) contains Ester, a synthetic lubricant, making it a synthetic blend.

I mean that I have never seen it with the word 'synthetic' or 'synthetic blend' anywhere on the container.

If you click on "MSDS" in your link, you will find this:

And I've already posted an example of "synthetic blend" being on the Mercon V container:

I use the stuff every day, never ever seen a container of Motorcraft Mercon V with synthetic blend on it. Would you like me to mail you a container?

Maybe its a Canadian thing.
