Mating the 3.0L Engine and Transmission

I took the tranny to the local AAMCO. The tech pulled on the center shaft, then tried to hammer it out, but it wouldn’t budge. He said it should just pull out. He said that the other end of the shaft is likely hung up in the planetary. They offered to pull off the bell housing and check it out, but that alone was $200. So, I skipped that fee. I’m going to take it apart myself. I doubt I can fix it, but it doesn’t cost me anything to have a look inside. I’ll likely just go pull another junkyard tranny and try that.
Thanks for all the help with trying to solve this problem for me. I really appreciate it.

Yeah it's probably broken. The planet hub

Should never need pliers.

I think I fixed it. I pulled the bell housing off the case and the center shaft freed right up. Fortunately, the teeth on the other end of the shaft looked to be in good shape. Reinstalled the whole thing and the center shaft is in the proper position. Torque converter went right on.

Here are a couple videos of the process.

Might want to look at that hub.

That kind of bind... Not ideal.

Of course for this situation....roll the dice is not overly risky

Yeah. I looked in there and didn’t see anything obviously tore up, but I won’t really know until 1. It starts up, and 2. I put it in drive.

This is a good feeling:

Guys, thanks for all the help. I have good news and bad news. The “new” motor is mated with the tranny and the whole thing is installed. I just fired her up. And now the bad news. It runs ROUGH. I think it’s timing related since I did not think to set the timing for the new motor.

I started a new thread here:

If you’re still interested in helping me, I’d sure appreciate the assistance. Thanks again.

rookie mistake number 4383...(I have done this one....) make sure the plug wires go to the correct cylinders. if you goof it, the truck will run, but it will run like warmed over crap...
Also make sure that the fuel pressure regulator is hooked up, that will affect the idle and running, and as a last thought, depending on how long the truck sat after it blew the motor, you might just need to get all of the old gas out of the lines and tank and run fresh gas. easy to check, if you shoot some carb cleaner into the intake and the idle smoothes out, bingo, you have a fuel problem.

make sure all vacuum lines are hooked up and not broken from the swap.

check to see if it is dropping any codes
