I have a 2000 ranger 4x4 4.0 liter 5 speed with electric 4x4 engagement. I have a rattling noise that is getting slightly worse each time I check it. I noticed it the other day after it had been idling for a while (only happens when idling) sounded like lifter of rocker arm noise. So I opened the hood and as soon as you touch the throttle it goes away. It sounded deeper in the motor bay so I got underneath and it started to sound like a bearing in the transmission was rattling but couldn't really tell cause it almost coming from the bell housing area. Pushing in the clutch pedal makes not difference, only a little rpm makes it go away. Motor has no oil consumption, and mileage is normal, truck runs fine. Mileage on motor and tranny is about 150K.

Any ideas?

could be a shifter, or throw bearing rattling. sound like the rpm is the right osolation to get the rattle to present itself. i wouldnt worry about it too much.
