Hey my 89 has a HORRIBLE rustoleum primer paint job. I hate it and its driving me crazy. I also hate painting. So Im thinking about getting a cheap basic paint job from the local Maaco. I want gloss black. I know that these places have pretty bad reputations, but there are happy customers here and there. This truck is going to be in the woods alot and mud and scratches can be expected, so it doesnt have to be perfect. A little orange peel here and there is fine by me as long as its black, glossy, and will last and provide rust protection for at least 3 or 4 years.

I've heard that it pays to prep the truck yourself ahead of time. I don't have a ton of time to dedicate to a $300 paint job, but im willing to give the truck a serious cleaning, and a good scuffing of the paint with just sandpaper by hand. Will this be sufficient? Will the Maaco enamel be able to properly adhere to the rustoleum primer?

Any input would be appreciated...

I suppose it's really up to you, and how good you want it to look. I would at least throw a decent dry and wet sand on it. I have heard though is that's where Macco makes money. They'll give you a $300 paint job, but suggest you need $1100 in body work to make it right. Hell if you don't mind that much, borrow or rent an airless spray rig from the paint store, and use a super fine tip (211 or so) with medium pressure, and what ever paint you want as long as it's idustrial oil base. It'll take you longer to mask and tape than paint.

airless? isnt that for houses? hahaha

and i dont have a garage so getting a halfway decent gloss is gonna be hard...

Well you said it was going to be in the mud and woods. I was just being uber cheap, but I had a buddy do his old 78 Ford that way and it wasn't half bad. Wasn't going to win any car shows, but it didn't rust.

I have had Maaco paint a few of my work trucks and have been pleased. The price was cheap and other than some very minor over spray on things like door handles and taillights the paint jobs were fine and have lasted.

cool i guess i could do most of the masking ahead of time if necessary.

yep do all the prep work yourself, remove all the trim and bumpers badges etc that you can possible get off fix your rust and dings and bring it in ready to tack cloth and spray. I have used my AAA years ago to get it to the shop

As rockwerks said. Remove anything you don't want painted. Mask it yourself. They tend to miss things in the 14 mins. they'll spend in prep. I call them 20 foot paint jobs. They look good from about 20 feet away. It's worth it for a knock around vehicle. I wouldn't put it on anything I want to look good, but a used truck that's going to be in the trees and mud, it's more than good enough.

As for the airless suggestion...............DON'T EVER!!!!!!!!! Nothing looks worse. They are designed to paint your fence, not your fenders.

+1.

Maaco is okay if you know ahead of time what you're getting into. See about making nice with the shop guy, maybe slip him a few bucks and tell him 'it's a gift for my mom' or some other suitable white lie to get a little extra attention paid to the job.

Worked for me...

Heres a blast from the past for you Cleveland guys. "My name is Earl Sheib and I'll paint any car any color for 199.99" If you through your brother in the back we'll paint him too.

If your not to worried I know guy that paint his car with leftover hhouse paint and a roller. It looked good at night. A little rough in the day time up close. You could see the roller marks.

Maaco is quality paint..............

if you do all prep work yourself.

Really, if you put in the time, and do the bondo, sanding and bring them a bare bones canvas.
It will look fantastic.

If you leave a decal on, it will get taped (poorly) and oversprayed.

Man, I remember Earl Scheib. Not from Cleveland, though.
