M5R1 won't stay in 3rd gear after rebuild

I have a 98 ranger 3.0l 4x4 with a M5R1. We rebuild it and now it won't stay in third gear. Pop the cover off and check to make sure the slider was facing the right direction and it has the chamfer facing the front like the FSM says. All the other gears work great. Does anybody have any ideas what could be wrong. Thanks for any help.
