I'm looking to do a full rebuild of my 2000 Mazda B4000s transmission, it's got the 4.0L, 4WD, M5ODR1 trans, the case is spotless, but the guts are trashed, I know the bell housings are different for different engines, but can I take the internals from another M5ODR1 of a different engine and rebuild them? Or do they have to be 4.0L specific?

Welcome to TRS :)

4.0l M5R1s used different gear ratios than the 4cyl and 3.0l V6 M5R1s

Good page to bookmark for future use: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech/

Go to transmission section
Select Ford Ranger Manual Transmissions
You will see the different ratios

So no, internals from a 4cyl or 3.0l M5R1 will not be the same

Just a heads up
1990 to 2000 Rangers/B4000s used the 4.0l OHV engines(160HP) and the M5R1(M5OD-R1)

2001-2011 Rangers/B4000s used the 4.0l SOHC engines(207HP) and the M5R1-HD

The 6 bell housing bolts line up with either
But the "HD" models have an extra bolt hole(7th bolt) in bell housing and a different shifter setup
Gear ratios are the same in these two but not sure about all the internal shafts and bearings

If you wanted to swap the whole transmission then an M5R1-HD from a 4WD can be use in your 2000, as long as you get the shifter with it
Both used the same clutch and transfer case as well

2001 and up have an extra sensor on the top rear, OSS sensor, it was for use with a new speedometer set up, not in the way so can just be left in place and unhooked

I have a lead on one from a 95 4L 2wd ranger, could I harvest the internals (minus the output shaft) for the rebuild

I'm sure people have swapped the gears between different cases, just because they are different ratios.

The ones I've read about swapped in the gears from a 2.3 case because they wanted the deeper gears for use when off-roading. So specifically for 4x4.

The gear ratios are different in first second and third gear so you have to take the counter shaft and all the gears off the output shaft and swap them to do the swap

You have to swap most of the guts if you go the 2.3/2.9/3.0 guts route. Easier to just buy new parts unless you have a really nice donor… parts are readily available and not expensive.

I’ve done it a couple times, keep this thread updated and I’ll help out as I can

There are some good video's on youtube too, but yeah, I just rebuilt the M5OD in my '90 a few months ago, I mostly did the bearings on the three shafts and the reverse pocket bearings... which reminds me I need to change the fluid sometime soon...
