My 92 Ranger has a M5R1 5-speed. Everybody else that I have talked to has the M5OD. Whats the difference between the two?

Same transmission...different name.

M5OD-R1 is the proper name for it.

Right on. Thanks for clearing that up for me. This is the 2nd tranny I have had in it and they have both whinned like the dickens. The first one whinned for years untill my brother ran it for 6 months with no fluid in it and burnt it up. I took the truck from him right after and put a new to me tranny in it and this one whines bad too. Is this common for these transmissions?

My 92 had the same problem and whined like crazy. I have a thread in the transmission sections that helped me out with alot of possibilities but I'm too special to put a link on here. When I pulled it I discovered it had been run with low or no fluid before I got it so it was completely burnt up. I've seen lots of similar year model trucks around my area that whine too. I'm of the opinion that they're very picky about their fluid level and since the rubber plugs at the top are bad to leak it results in lots of trans that were run without enough fluid for a while so it burns 'em up, of course opinions are like a....... I mean noses everyone's got one. Maybe you can ask one of the tech advisors or they'll see your thread and post up with a definitive answer. I was told on my thread that the pilot bushing is a major culprit for whining

Well that sucks. I know this one leaks bad and have to add a quart about onces every couple weeks. It shifts fine and dont pop out of gear or anything though. So I guess I just have to deal with it till she blows.

If it is leaking at the shift rail plugs you can replace the rubber leaky ones with steel ones. In the tech section under transmissions it gets a little more detailed I'm pretty sure it gives you the part number for the dorman plugs that fit it. If it makes you feel any better my replacement trans is leaking too, I'm pretty sure I just gotta reseal the tailshaft housing and I'll be good to go lol

Ya thats were she is leaking from. only reason I know this is from people saying thats where they leak 90% of the time and that all around those plugs, is the only clean spot on the trans. I read the tech about people tapping and putting the metal plugs in, but I really dont want to hassle with that. I will just get the rubber ones and seal them as I put them in. She just needs to last me a few more years and then a certain motor and trans from a non ford manufacturer will be replaceing it.

I recently had a interesting leak from mine that I believe I solved the problem.

The downside to replacing the rubber plugs with caps is that the plugs are the vent. Once capped off good the vent them becomes the shifter.

The leak i had from mine was due to the plastic bushings for the ball on the shifter stub. The inner bushing had completely desintigrated into a million small pieces. Never had a sloppy shifter at all, and never noticed it was missing untill I did a full rebuild over the weekend. The lower bushing acts as a seal for the shifter, thus stopping the splashing of fluid up under it.

If I was to do over 70 mph at any point it would start puking fluid out. Never at a high rate but it would always leave the underside of the truck soaked with oil.

Part two of my rebuild was because of a whine. Sounds like a supercharger in 1,2,3 and 5th right? You have a bearing that has gone out and needs to be replaced.

When i had mine apart the oil pump had chunks of the lower plastic shifter bushing in it. I also found that the input shaft also had pieces in it. This was likely blocking the oil flow through the input shaft, causing a bearing to heat up.

Since the rebuild it's been smooth and quiet.

FWIW I have been running 0W30 motor oil in my trans for over 3 years, and this is the first problem I have had. And it wasn't related to the oil.

Thanks for the info. I noticed oil at the top of my shifter but thought that was just from maybe me spilling a little when I added fluid. Im not sure that the bushing you are refuring to looks like, but below the shifter round plate that bolts to the trans, there is nothing. Its just a round metal plate with 3 holes in it and then the rest of the shifter which plugs into the trans itself. Can you get these bushings at any auto store or do you have to order? How much did it cost you to do a full rebuild on the trans?

I never really paid much attention to my shifter whenever I would add fluid to it, so after watching the video I went out and opened her back up.......ya I got nothin in there. I dont even have the rubber peice that is part of the top round plate that slides over the selector. So I guess I will be buying me a kit. Thanks.
