Howdy,

So I pulled my transmission out (2004 4.0 SOHC 4x4) and took it to a shop to have it rebuilt and when they were pulling a bearing off managed to crack the housing. So now I'm on the hunt for a new M5od-R1HD housing which is proving elusive, there are several non-HD variants available within 150 miles or so and of course the cheaper ones are 4x2. So my question is since I have the output shaft and tailhousing for the 4x4 can I buy a cheap roached out M5od-R1 from a 4x2 out of a 90's Ranger and have them rebuild the gears and shifter from my HD into it? From reading the Tech Articles it looks like the only difference is the 2 o'clock bolt on the HD, I can live with only 7 bolts holding my transmission to the engine, but does the starter line up and I've seen posts mention a different shifter for the HD?

P.S. Out of curiosity how common is it to have the transmission shop crack the housing?
