Hey all,

I'm just wondering who all has the M5OD-R1?

Also, does your transmission already have the freeze plug install or the plastic inserts?

I'm really kinda wondering if there is a way to understand which years of trannies would have them and which years that wouldn't have them. Do you guys think that they had the metal plugs in the early years and then got rid of them because of cost in the later years?

I'd like to figure this out... just to help some people out with whether they'd need to fix that leaky problem or not.

My 94 Ranger has the M5OD and it is factory. The freeze plugs were already in it.

did you buy the truck new?
As far as I knew, they all had rubber in the rear and metal in the front.

Whoever owned your truck prior to you probably knew about the problem and had it fixed. I know the current transmission in my truck has freeze plugs on it, but mine is a Jasper reman (bought at the junkyard for $37.10!!). I have seen alot of them where people tried to stave off the leaking rubber plugs with RTV sealant, but about half of them that i've seen had fluid leaking right around the RTV.

I pulled the rubber plugs out of mine and cleaned them real well, then cleaned the ports well and put a gob of black RTV on each one before sticking it back in there. Worked well.

I bought the metal plugs for mine, but was not able to hammer them in while it was in the truck.

My '94 was leaking too. I pulled em and put black rtv all around in there a week or two ago. Seems to be working so far.
