m5od input shaft end play specs

anyone have input shaft end play specs so I can check while I have the engine out? I can pull the input shaft out a bit, but I havn't measured yet. It surprised me how much, but it also surprised me on a VW transmission that was apperantly in spec so I have nothing to compare to. I've got a dial indicator, so I'd like to check for peace of mind.

If it's out of spec, can I adjust it without dissassembling the whole transmission? It looks like there's a plate on the front that comes off, shims behind that?
