have a 97 4.0L 4x4, M5OD tranny...got home from the store the other day and noticed a noise that was only there when tranny was engaged. if i pushed the clutch it went away. now i'm assuming this is the input shaft bearing, its definitely a bad bearing noise. my question is...will it last another month? i just don't want it to wreck completely and destroy the tranny. i'm selling this truck in a month to upgrade to a silverado 1500, or F150.

so i just need to make sure that its not going to do anything worse than make a noise. Thanks

First any kind of noise "up front" in a mazda trans is bad news...

It's likely NOT the input bearing.

But what I'd recommend is that you change the oil in the trans immediatly.

Take note of how much oil you get out of it. ("Full" is 2-3/4 Quarts)

Look for metal chips.

actual "Chunks" is invariably pieces of gear.

bearing material usually makes the oil look like metallic paint.

Gold tinted metallic piece are synchro brass.

is the noise worst when stopped trans in neutral?

Does the noise diminish as you go from second to third then disappears in 4th
only to reappear in 5th?
